Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Plot

Within three hours, the police had secured my home. What they found inside the locked room completely dismantled Elena's story. Forensic officers recovered not only the fabricated records and insurance policies, but also hidden cameras Elena had installed throughout the house—cameras intended to record edited snippets of the children crying to use as evidence of my neglect. Instead, the raw, unedited footage from the past two weeks told the true, agonizing story.

The video logs showed Elena leaving the house for hours at a time, leaving Lily alone to care for Tommy. They showed Lily bravely climbing onto kitchen counters to fetch tap water in small plastic cups, attempting to feed her infant brother bits of crackers she found in the pantry, and curling up beside him on the hard floor to comfort him when he cried from hunger.

When Officer Miller returned to the hospital later that night, his face was pale with a mixture of shock and quiet rage. He walked straight past Elena, who was sitting under guard in the corner of the waiting room, and approached me.

"Mr. Vance," Miller said softly. "We reviewed the footage from your home system."

I covered my face with my hands, the tears I had been holding back finally breaking through. "How could she do that to them? How could a mother do that to her own baby?"

"Money, control, severe psychiatric illness... it doesn't matter what her reason was," Miller said, putting a heavy hand on my shoulder. "What matters is that your daughter is a hero. That little girl kept her brother alive through sheer force of will. And your flight records completely clear you of any wrongdoing. Your wife is being placed under arrest for attempted murder, severe child abuse, and filing false police reports."

Elena was cuffed and led away through the hospital lobby. She didn't look at me, nor did she look back at the room where her children lay recovering. Her eyes were blank, cold, and entirely devoid of remorse.

Though the immediate danger had passed, the road ahead felt dauntingly long. Tommy was safe in the ICU, receiving the medical nourishment his little body desperately needed, but the psychological wounds inflicted on my children were deep. Lily refused to sleep without holding my hand. Every time a door shut in the hallway, she flinched, clutching my arm as if she feared I would vanish into thin air again.

That night, after Tommy was moved out of intensive care and into a private room, I pulled a cot alongside his crib. Lily curled up next to me, her small head resting on my chest.

"Dad?" she whispered into the darkness.

"Yes, baby?"

"Is Mommy ever coming back?"

I squeezed her tightly, kissing the top of her hair. "No, sweetie. She's never going to hurt you or Tommy ever again. I promise you. I am never leaving you alone again."

"I tried really hard to be good, Dad," she whimpered, her voice breaking. "I tried to keep him safe like you told me to do before you left."

"You did more than be good, Lily," I told her, my eyes overflowing. "You saved your brother's life. You are the bravest girl in the entire world."

She didn't answer, but I felt her shoulders relax for the first time since I had stepped through the front door of our house. Within minutes, her breathing evened out into a deep, peaceful sleep. But as I sat in the dark, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of my children's chests, I knew that saving them from that house was only the first step. Healing them would take everything I had.
