Chapter 9 - A New Normal

The dinner progressed in a way none of us could have predicted a year prior.

When my son became slightly overwhelmed by the restaurant noise midway through the meal, he didn't crawl under the table in distress. Instead, he pulled out his communication tablet, tapped a pre-set button, and the automated speaker announced clearly: "Need quiet break, please."

Without missing a beat, my mother nodded immediately, standing up from her seat. "There’s a lovely, quiet courtyard just outside those glass doors," she offered, looking at me for approval. "May I take him out for some fresh air?"

I smiled, feeling a deep, settling warmth wash over my chest. "Of course, Mom. He loves looking at fountains."

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the restaurant, I watched as my mother walked hand-in-hand with my son through the cobblestone courtyard, pointing at the bubbling water feature while he calmly observed the fish swimming beneath the surface. They didn't need words to bridge the gap between their generations anymore; patience and mutual respect had built a language entirely of their own.

Later that evening, when the dessert platters arrived and everyone sang Happy Birthday, my son didn't cover his ears in panic. Instead, he clapped his hands in rhythm with the music, letting out a bright, joyous cheer when the candles were blown out.

As the celebration wound down and we stepped out into the crisp evening air outside the restaurant, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a video call from David.

I accepted it instantly and held the screen up so he could see both children, while my mother stood close by, smiling warmly into the camera lens.

"Happy birthday, Martha," David said cheerfully from across the world, his face illuminated by the base lights behind him.

"Thank you, David," my mother replied, her voice steady and sincere. "And thank you for serving our country. We can't wait until you're home with us."

"We'll be together soon," David promised, his eyes locking onto mine through the glass screen with a look of boundless love and shared triumph.
