Chapter 5 - The Arraignment and the First Blow

The county courthouse was a towering monolith of gray limestone and mirrored glass, smelling faintly of floor wax and old paper.

Noah was currently at a secure child advocacy center participating in a scheduled therapy session, leaving me free to face the fire.

As I walked down the long, polished corridor toward Courtroom 4B, I spotted them.

Daniel was dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, looking every bit the polished corporate executive. Melissa stood beside him in a conservative black dress, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief like a grieving Victorian widow. Their high-priced attorney, Victor Sterling—a tall, silver-haired man with an expensive watch—stood beside them, whispering strategy.

When Daniel saw me approach, his face twisted into a mask of pure venom.

“You pathetic piece of trash,” Daniel hissed under his breath as I passed them. “You think you’ve won? You’re a lonely geek playing house with someone else’s kid. When the judge sees through your manipulation, I’m going to sue you into bankruptcy.”

I didn't break stride or even look at him. I simply stared straight ahead and took a seat at the defense table next to Marcus Sterling.

“Don't let them rattle you,” Marcus muttered, reviewing a stack of legal briefs. “Victor is going to try to paint you as an unstable, anti-social bachelor with an axe to grind against his brother.”

A few minutes later, the heavy oak doors opened.

“All rise for the Honorable Judge Eleanor Vance,” the bailiff announced loudly.

Judge Vance was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled back into a tight bun and eyes that looked like they had seen every possible brand of human misery and survived to tell the tale. She settled into her high-backed leather chair, adjusted her reading glasses, and looked down at the case files.

“We are here for Case Number FC-2026-8810, In re the Matter of Noah Carter,” Judge Vance began, her voice crisp and authoritative. “We have competing emergency motions. The state and the temporary guardian are requesting extension of protective custody and formal termination of parental visitation pending a full psychological and criminal investigation. The respondents are moving for immediate dismissal and full restoration of custody based on parental alienation claims.”

Victor Sterling stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with theatrical flair.

“Your Honor, what we have here is a tragic case of a bitter, estranged sibling weaponizing standard domestic discipline to stage a kidnapping and execute a malicious smear campaign,” Victor began, his voice smooth as polished marble. “Mr. Daniel Carter is a pillar of his community, a dedicated father, and a senior executive. The child made a minor mistake, and like any concerned parent, the father utilized a brief time-out on the porch to teach responsibility. The video provided by the petitioner was severely edited—chopped and spliced by a software engineer who knows how to manipulate digital media.”

Marcus stood up immediately. “Objection, Your Honor. Counsel is making baseless accusations without forensic proof.”

“Sustained,” Judge Vance said dryly. “Mr. Sterling, save the theatrical speeches for a jury. I have the forensic metadata right here from the police cyber unit. The video was unedited.”

Victor didn’t miss a beat. “Even so, Your Honor, it was an isolated lapse in judgment under extreme stress. To rip a child away from his loving parents over a single disciplinary error is a miscarriage of justice.”

Judge Vance looked over her glasses directly at Daniel, then at Melissa, before shifting her gaze to Marcus.

“Mr. Sterling, what does your co-counsel have to offer in response?”

Marcus stood up, calmly opening a heavy black binder.

“Your Honor, opposing counsel calls this an isolated lapse in judgment. We submit Exhibit A through H: three years of medical records, emergency room visits for unexplained fractures, threatening text messages from the mother demanding the child be ‘disciplined into silence,’ and audio recordings of both parents threatening physical violence.”

Daniel’s face instantly lost all color. Melissa gasped loudly, clutching her chest.

Victor Sterling spun around, staring at my brother in sudden, unmasked horror. “Daniel... did you know about this?”

Daniel stuttered, opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of water. “It’s... it’s all out of context! They’re lies!”

Judge Vance held up a single hand, silencing the entire courtroom. She slowly opened the digital tablet synced to Marcus’s binder, scrolling through page after page of undeniable proof.

“Mr. and Mrs. Carter,” Judge Vance said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying weight. “You are not dealing with a simple family dispute anymore. This court is ordering an immediate, permanent extension of emergency protective custody to Mr. Ethan Carter. Furthermore, I am binding your criminal charges over to the grand jury for immediate indictment.”

Daniel slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his hands as the gavel came down with a sharp, final crack.
