Chapter 6 - The Desperate Hours

While peace settled over the Bennett estate, Manhattan was turning into a nightmare for Cole Whitmore.

By late afternoon, the snow had turned into a slushy, freezing rain that drenched his expensive wool suit as he wandered the streets near Central Park like a homeless ghost. He had been turned away from three different luxury hotels because his credit cards were declined and his cash reserves—totaling barely two hundred dollars from his wallet—had already been spent on a cheap diner coffee and a subway fare.

His phone buzzed incessantly in his pocket. It was his landlord, demanding he vacate the penthouse within twenty-four hours. It was his luxury car leasing company, threatening repossession. It was a dozen different creditors smelling blood in the water.

In a last, pathetic burst of desperation, Cole dialed the one number he swore he would never call again—his mother-in-law's private line, which had miraculously patched through an automated legal redirect.

"Mrs. Bennett, please," Cole choked out into the receiver, his voice cracking with exhaustion and freezing rain dripping from his hair. "Please, put me through to Lauren. This has gone too far. We can talk about this like adults. It was a mistake—just a stupid holiday mistake!"

A cold, crisp voice answered on the other end. It wasn't my mother. It was Mr. Harris.

"Mr. Whitmore, this is Arthur Harris representing Lauren Bennett-Whitmore."

"Harris! Thank God," Cole babbled, his words tumbling over each other in a frantic rush. "Listen to me, you need to tell Lauren she’s acting hysterical. Taking the kids, freezing my accounts—this is kidnapping and corporate sabotage! If she comes back home right now, I won't press charges for desertion. We can sweep this under the rug—"

"Mr. Whitmore," Mr. Harris interrupted, his tone as sharp as a scalpel. "Let me make your legal reality crystal clear so there is no confusion whatsoever."

"What are you talking about?" Cole sneered, his desperate panic momentarily flaring back into arrogance. "I'm her husband! She has no legal right to cut me off from—"

"Your marriage is legally dissolved in terms of asset management, and divorce papers citing abandonment, financial control, and domestic abuse were filed two hours ago at the Westchester County Courthouse," Mr. Harris stated flatly. "Furthermore, any further attempt on your part to contact Mrs. Bennett, her family, or approach the estate will result in an immediate criminal restraining order. You are a ghost to this family, Mr. Whitmore."

"No!" Cole screamed into the phone, standing in the middle of a crowded Fifth Avenue sidewalk while pedestrians rushed past him in their winter coats. "You can't do this! Lauren! Put Lauren on the phone! Lauren!"

Click.

The dial tone hummed mockingly in his ear.

Cole lowered his phone slowly, his knees finally buckling. He dropped to the slush-covered pavement outside a glittering department store window, staring at his own pale, shattered reflection in the glass. The man in the reflection wore a designer suit, but inside, he was entirely hollow.

He had traded a queen for a pawn, and in doing so, he had lost his entire kingdom.
