Chapter 5 - Evelyn's Legacy

Evelyn had passed away from cancer five years ago. She had been a brilliant businesswoman, accumulating a significant estate. In her will, she had set up a massive, highly protected trust fund worth over two million dollars.
But Evelyn had been incredibly perceptive. She had noticed early on that Marissa was materialistic and that Brian lacked a moral compass when stressed. Therefore, the trust was explicitly structured: the money was not for Brian or Marissa. It was held in a strict educational and welfare trust solely for her grandchildren, administered by a corporate trustee and myself as the co-trustee.
The clause was ironclad: The funds shall be distributed evenly among all legally recognized grandchildren of Arthur and Evelyn Vance. However, if any child is removed from the family unit or if parental rights are terminated, that child’s portion reverts back to the principal trust, to be managed exclusively by Arthur Vance for the remaining children's direct benefit.
Marissa had miscalculated. She thought that by legally discarding Lily through an underground rehoming network, she could keep Mason, pretend Lily had been placed in a "specialized therapeutic boarding school," and continue to draw thousands of dollars a month from the trust under the guise of "educational expenses" for Mason and Chloe.
They weren't just abandoning a child because she was difficult. They were executing a calculated financial scam, using their own children as chess pieces for a multi-million-dollar payout.
"Mr. Vance?"
I looked up to see Sarah, the CPS caseworker, standing in the doorway of the hospital room. She had a thick file under her arm and a look of deep sorrow on her face.
"I just received a call from the Orlando Police Department," Sarah said softly, glancing at the sleeping Lily. "They located your son and daughter-in-law at the Grand Floridian Resort. They were arrested at the breakfast buffet in front of their daughter."
I closed my eyes, a heavy wave of exhaustion and relief washing over me. "And the baby? Chloe?"
"She is currently with Florida child welfare services. They are arranging to fly her back to Ohio immediately. But Mr. Vance... we have a serious situation here. Brian and Marissa are facing federal charges for child endangerment, neglect, and conspiracy to commit human trafficking due to the rehoming agency paperwork."
"Good," I said, my voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "Let them rot."
"But because of the nature of the arrests, Mason and Lily are officially wards of the state right now," Sarah continued cautiously. "We need to discuss placement."
Mason sat up straight in his bed, his eyes wide with terror. "Grandpa? Don't let them take us away. Please don't put us in a foster home."

I stood up, walking over to Mason’s bed and taking his hand, while reaching out to touch Lily’s cool, sleeping forehead.
"Nobody is taking you anywhere," I said, looking Sarah dead in the eye. "I am their grandfather. And I am filing for emergency full custody today."
