Chapter 4 - A New Beginning in Blue Ridge

We decided to relocate entirely. We packed our lives into a small moving truck and drove five hundred miles away to a picturesque, thriving mountain town called Blue Ridge. It was a place Emily had always dreamed of visiting—a community surrounded by national forests, clear lakes, and people who judged you by the firmness of your handshake rather than the brand of your watch.

We rented a modest, two-bedroom cottage with a wrap-around porch that overlooked the mountains. For Lily, it was an adventure. We told her that Daddy was starting a new company and that we needed a place with more trees for her to climb. She thrived almost immediately, her laughter returning as she explored the woods behind our new home.

I officially established Summit Architecture & Design. Starting from scratch without the backing of a major real estate empire was terrifying. I rented a tiny one-room office above a bakery downtown. The smell of fresh bread drifted through the floorboards as I drafted residential layouts for local builders.

Emily didn't sit idle either. With Lily settled into her new school, Emily used her experience in hospitality and her incredible eye for design to get a job managing a local boutique hotel.

One evening in late spring, as we sat on our porch watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of violet and amber, Emily looked over at me, her skin glowing and free of stress.

"Do you miss the old life, Daniel?" she asked quietly.

"I miss the illusion of security," I admitted honestly. "But I don't miss the rot beneath it. For thirty-four years, I thought love was something you had to earn by being perfect and putting up with cruelty. Out here, with you, I learned that love is just... peace."

She leaned her head against my shoulder. "We're going to make it, aren't we?"

"We already have," I said.

But the peace we had built was about to be tested. The family we left behind wasn't done trying to assert their control over our lives.
