Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

While the legal machinery ground into motion, I needed to find a job. I couldn't rely solely on the trust fund, even if Arthur was confident we would win control of it. I wanted to prove to myself—and to my family—that I didn't need the Harrison name to succeed.

I spent my days sending out resumes and attending interviews. It was a humbling experience; many firms in the city were connected to my brother's company, and I could tell when a hiring manager had received a quiet call from Mark warning them off hiring me.

But I didn't give up. In late February, I landed an interview with Vanguard Tech Solutions, a rapidly growing green-energy startup that was looking for a Chief Financial Officer. The CEO was a brilliant, no-nonsense woman named Maya Lin who cared nothing for old-money family networks; she only cared about results.

"Your resume is impressive, Daniel," Maya said, looking at me across her modern, sunlit office. "But I see you left Harrison & Sons very abruptly. Care to explain why?"

I decided to be completely honest. "My family’s firm operates on old-fashioned principles of nepotism and control. I chose to prioritize my wife and daughter over an environment that lacked integrity. I wanted to build something based on merit, not a last name."

Maya stared at me for a long moment, then a slow smile crossed her face. "Good. I can't stand family dynasties anyway. They’re bad for innovation. The salary here is lower than what you made at your family firm, but we offer significant equity. If we grow the way I think we will, you’ll be making twice your old salary in three years. Are you in?"

"I’m in," I said, shaking her hand.

When I got home that evening to tell Emily the news, she didn't just congratulate me—she had news of her own.

"I went back to the university today," she said, holding up a packet of papers. "I enrolled to finish my degree in social work. I have one year left. With your new job and the savings, we can afford the tuition."

"Emily, that's amazing!" I caught her in a hug, spinning her around the living room.

"I’m not going to be the woman who hides in the background anymore, Daniel," she whispered against my neck. "Your mother wanted me to feel like I didn't belong in her world. Fine. I’ll build my own."

Meanwhile, Lily was thriving. Without the constant tension of family dinners where she was subtly compared to Mark’s children, her confidence bloomed. She started taking art classes at the community center and made a group of close friends at her school. Her drawings, which used to be dark and minimalist, became bright explosions of color, depicting our family of three holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

The shadows of the past were fading, but the final confrontation with my mother and brother was rushing toward us. The court date for the injunction and the civil suit was set for the second week of April.
