Chapter 8 - The Full Circle

A year passes faster than you think when you are no longer living under the weight of an unspoken lie.

Before I knew it, December had returned.

The first snowfall of the season hit the city in mid-December, dusting the streetlamps and rooftops in pure, quiet white. My art gallery had just wrapped up its winter showcase, and for the first time in my career, three of my largest paintings had sold to prominent collectors.

Five years ago, I would have celebrated alone in my studio with a quiet drink. This time, my phone rang before the gallery doors even closed.

It was Dad.

“Did you wrap up the show?” he asked, his voice filled with genuine enthusiasm.

“Just finished, Dad. It went really well.”

“Good! Because Melanie and I are already planning the menu for Christmas dinner, and if you aren’t home by Christmas Eve, your sister threatens to burn the rolls on purpose.”

I laughed, a genuine, easy laugh that echoed off the gallery walls. “I’ll be there tomorrow afternoon, Dad. Tell her to leave the baking to me.”

“We’ll be waiting,” he said softly. “Drive safe, Ryan.”

The next day, I loaded up my car. On the passenger seat sat a fresh tray of homemade cookies, carefully wrapped in red ribbon, alongside wrapped presents for Dad, Melanie, her husband, and little Sarah, who was now walking and babbling her first words.

As I drove down the familiar highway toward my hometown, the heavy, anxious knot that used to form in my stomach whenever I approached that exit was completely gone.

The sky was painted in shades of soft pink and indigo as twilight fell over the town. The streetlights flickered on, illuminating snow-dusted front lawns and houses glowing with festive fairy lights.

When I pulled up to my father’s house, I stopped the car in the driveway and just looked at it for a moment.

The old house wasn’t dark or oppressive anymore. The large front bay window shone bright with warm, yellow light. Inside, I could see the silhouette of a massive Christmas tree, decorated with multicolored lights that reflected off the snow outside.

I picked up the tray of cookies, grabbed the stack of presents, and walked up the front steps.
