Chapter 6 - Sirens in the Night

The red and blue flashers painted the brick walls of the house in frantic, pulsing strokes. The wail of the sirens grew deafeningly loud, cutting off abruptly as multiple cruiser engines cut their throttles right outside our driveway.
My brother-in-law froze, his hand still raised in the air, suspended mid-motion. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking pasty and sickly in the emergency lights. Marcus stopped dead in his tracks near the coal chute, his eyes darting frantically toward the open bulkhead doors as if calculating his chances of outrunning a police cruiser on foot.
“What... what did you do?” my brother-in-law whispered, his voice trembling as he looked down at me pinned against the wall.
“The emergency app didn't just stream audio,” I rasped, sucking in air as I pushed his arm away from my chest. “It pinned our exact GPS coordinates to the dispatch center the second the safety protocol was overridden. The custody case was never truly closed—it was flagged for high-risk monitoring.”
Before he could respond, heavy boots crunched rapidly across the gravel driveway above.
“Police! Nobody move! Stay where you are!” a commanding voice bellowed down through the open bulkhead doors.
A flashlight beam cut through the darkness of the basement, blindingly bright, sweeping across the concrete floor before locking directly onto my brother-in-law and Marcus. Within seconds, two uniformed officers descended the bulkhead steps with practiced speed and precision, their hands resting firmly on their holstered sidearms.
“Hands where we can see them! Interlock your fingers behind your heads right now!” the lead officer ordered, his tone absolute and non-negotiable.
Marcus dropped to his knees immediately, clasping his hands behind his neck without a word of protest. My brother-in-law hesitated for a fraction of a second, his jaw clenched in fury, but as a second pair of officers poured in from the interior basement door—having been let in by my sister—he realized the game was entirely over. Slowly, bitterly, he raised his hands and locked his fingers behind his head.
“Officers, over here!” my sister called out, rushing down the interior stairs with tears streaming down her face, looking bruised and shaken. She pointed directly at my brother-in-law. “He planned the whole thing. He drugged the punch, he locked my mother in the laundry room, and he was planning to flee the state with my daughter tonight!”

“We have everything on the live cloud recording,” Grandma added steadily, picking up my phone from the floor where it had fallen and handing it safely back to me. “Every word, every threat, every confession.”
The lead officer nodded, stepping forward to slap heavy steel handcuffs onto my brother-in-law’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click. As they hauled him up and read him his rights, the nightmare that had hovered over our family for months finally began to dissolve.
