Chapter 10 - A New Beginning
Three years later.
The forty-second-floor penthouse on Lake Shore Drive looked entirely different.
The cold, minimalist aesthetic designed by consultants had been replaced by a home that was warm, vibrant, and filled with life. Colorful children’s drawings hung proudly on the refrigerator in the kitchen. Potted plants lined the sunny windowsills, and the massive sixteen-person mahogany dining table was no longer a monument to solitude; it was covered with school books, coloring markers, and family photo albums.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sound of bright, joyful laughter echoed down the hallway.
Lucy, now seven years old with her hair neatly braided, sprinted into the living room holding a handcrafted card. “Daddy Adrian! Look! I got an A-plus on my spelling test!”
Adrian—wearing a comfortable sweater, his hearing aids adjusted perfectly to filter out the pleasant background hum of a busy home—smiled brightly, catching her as she ran into his arms.
“That’s my girl, spelling champion,” Adrian praised, lifting her up easily.
From the kitchen, the rich aroma of a Sunday roast drifted through the air. Maya walked into the living room, wearing a soft apron over a casual dress, wiping her hands on a kitchen towel with a loving, radiant smile on her face. A gold band shimmered brightly on her left ring finger as she wrapped her arms around Adrian’s waist, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Marcus Vance, who was visiting for Sunday dinner, sat on the sofa shaking his head with a mock-serious expression, though his eyes were warm with happiness.
“Honestly, Adrian,” Marcus joked, taking a sip of wine. “When you hired a housekeeper three years ago, I never expected you to completely restructure your entire life, get married, and turn the most feared corporate fortress in Chicago into a cozy family home.”
Adrian looked down at Maya, who smiled up at him with a look of deep, unshakable devotion, and then at Lucy, who was proudly showing off her spelling test. The silence that had once defined his existence was gone, replaced by a world rich with sound, laughter, and unconditional love.
Adrian pulled Maya closer, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
