Chapter 9 - One Year Later

The celebration of survival took place in the backyard of their new home. It was a beautiful afternoon, filled with the laughter of friends, neighbors, and the medical staff from the oncology ward who had become lifelong friends.

A long table was set up beneath a large oak tree, covered in an array of food that Sarah could now eat without any restrictions whatsoever.

I sat on a lawn chair alongside Dr. Cole, watching the family interact. Mark was at the grill, flipping burgers and laughing with Noah, who was wearing a chef's hat three sizes too big. Sarah was moving between the guests, her laughter ringing out across the yard—a sound that, a year ago, we weren't sure we would ever hear again.

During the peak of the party, Mark tapped his glass with a fork, calling for everyone's attention. The yard grew quiet as guests turned toward the patio.

Mark stepped up next to Sarah, his arm sliding around her waist. He looked out at the gathered crowd, his voice filled with deep gratitude.

"One year ago today, our family was in a very dark place," Mark said, his eyes scanning the faces of the doctors and nurses who had saved her life. "We faced a mountain that we didn't think we could climb. But we learned that when things get broken, you don't throw them away. You rebuild them with love, patience, and a whole lot of crayons."

The crowd chuckled warmly.

"I want to thank everyone here for being part of our renovation team," Mark continued, looking down at his son. "But most of all, I want to thank my son, Noah. And I want to make a special announcement."

Mark dropped to one knee right there on the patio, pulling a small, velvet box from his pocket. The crowd gasped collectively.

Sarah’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes widening with joy.

"Sarah," Mark said, looking up at her with a devotion that was absolute. "You showed me what true strength looks like. You gave me a second chance to be the man, the husband, and the father this family deserves. Will you marry me again? Let's build this new life together permanently."

Sarah didn't even hesitate. She nodded vigorously, tears of pure happiness streaming down her face. "Yes, Mark! A thousand times yes!"

As Mark stood up and slipped the ring onto her finger, the backyard erupted into a roaring chorus of cheers and applause. Noah jumped into the air, throwing his chef's hat into the wind like a graduation cap.
