Part 2: The Call That Changed Everything

The match burned between my fingers.

One more second.

One flick.

The Sterling mansion, with its polished marble floors and priceless paintings, would become nothing more than smoke.

Then my phone rang.

I almost ignored it.

The screen flashed:

St. Jude's Hospital.

I answered.

"Mrs. Carter?" Dr. Mitchell's voice sounded different—urgent, almost excited.

"Your daughter just squeezed a nurse's hand."

My breath caught.

"What?"

"She's showing brain activity we didn't expect. It's faint, but it's there. We need you here immediately."

The match slipped from my fingers into the rain and died with a hiss.

Without another glance at the mansion, I climbed back into my truck and drove.

Hours later, I sat beside Chloe's bed.

Her eyelids fluttered.

Then slowly...

Painfully...

She opened her eyes.

"Mom..."

It was barely a whisper.

Tears streamed down my face.

"I thought I'd lost you."

She tried to smile before wincing.

"The baby?"

Dr. Mitchell entered quietly.

"The baby's heartbeat is weak," he admitted. "But it's still there. Against every expectation."

Hope.

Just one tiny heartbeat.

But it was enough.

The following morning, Detective Angela Brooks arrived with two investigators.

"We found security footage from a gas station near the bus stop," she said.

"It shows Liam and Eleanor throwing Chloe out of the SUV before driving away."

She placed another folder on the table.

"And that's not all."

Inside were photographs.

Bruises.

Medical reports.

Bank statements.

Text messages.

Everything Chloe had secretly documented during three years of abuse.

"I knew someday they'd kill me," Chloe whispered.

"So I kept everything."

The detectives looked at one another.

"This isn't just assault anymore."

"It's attempted murder."

By sunset, police vehicles surrounded the Sterling estate.

Liam walked outside wearing an expensive suit, smiling arrogantly.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Detective Brooks handed him a warrant.

"Liam Sterling, you're under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy."

His smile disappeared.

"You can't prove anything."

The detective simply held up Chloe's phone.

"We already have."

As officers placed handcuffs on him, Eleanor stormed outside screaming.

"Do you know who we are?"

"Yes," Detective Brooks replied calmly.

"And by tomorrow, everyone else will too."
