Chapter 8 - The Grand Opening

The grand opening of Delgado’s at Calder House—the upscale French-American fusion bistro that Sebastian had built and placed entirely under my creative direction—was the most talked-about culinary event in Chicago that autumn.
The restaurant was packed from wall to wall with food critics, local dignitaries, long-time regulars, and close friends like Mrs. Ortiz, who beamed with pride from a VIP table near the front.
Inside the bustling kitchen, the energy was electric. Orders were called out, pans sizzled, and the rich aromas of truffled butter and caramelized reduction filled the air. I moved from station to station with calm precision, tasting sauces, plating entrées, and ensuring every single dish leaving the kitchen met the uncompromising standards I had set for myself.
As the final orders for the evening rush began to wind down, the kitchen door swung open, and Sebastian walked in. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket tonight; he wore a sharp black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the proud partner and supportive friend.
The entire kitchen staff applauded quietly as he walked over to my station.
“Well, Chef Delgado,” Sebastian said, a slow, proud smile spreading across his face as he looked at the packed dining room visible through the pass-through window. “Every single table is booked solid for the next three months. The Tribune review is calling your pan-seared duck breast a masterpiece. I’d say your first night was an unqualified success.”
I let out a long breath, untying my chef’s apron and tossing it onto the counter. “I couldn’t have done it without your guidance, Sebastian. Or your stubborn refusal to let me give up when things got hard.”
“I didn't do anything except recognize talent when I saw it,” he replied smoothly. He reached behind his back and produced a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box tied with a silver ribbon.
I blinked, staring at the box. “What’s this? Another restaurant expansion?”
“Open it and find out.”
With slightly trembling fingers, I untied the ribbon and popped open the velvet lid. Inside rested a delicate, custom-designed pendant necklace shaped like a tiny, elegant silver key, embedded with a single, brilliant diamond.
“The key to the executive suite,” Sebastian whispered, his gray eyes holding mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. “And the key to a lot more than just my office, if you’re willing to take a chance on a stubborn billionaire who once found your baby sleeping on his basement stairs.”
Before I could answer, the kitchen door swung open again, and Lily waddled in carrying a miniature silver chef’s hat, pushed along by Mrs. Ortiz.
“Say yes, Mama!” Lily cheered loudly, echoing the exact words we hadn't known we were waiting to hear.
The entire kitchen burst into warm, joyful laughter and applause.

I looked at Sebastian, then down at the delicate silver key, and finally toward my daughter, who was smiling up at both of us with absolute, unconditional love.
The nightmare of the past was gone, buried beneath the weight of true justice and hard-earned peace. And our future—bright, sweet, and entirely our own—was just beginning.
