Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Last Stand

The front doors of the Vance estate were heavy mahogany, adorned with ornate brass handles. I didn't knock. I used the emergency bypass key hidden inside the porch lantern—a trick I had known since I was sixteen.

The foyer was dead silent, illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier. The scent of expensive jasmine incense hung thick in the air.

From the mahogany-paneled study down the hall, I heard voices speaking in hurried, tense tones.

"The transfer is taking too long, Alexander!" a sharp, commanding voice spoke. My mother.

"The server is verifying the secondary keys," a man's voice replied—Alexander Vance. "Once the funds clear into the Panama accounts, we release the anonymous leak to the U.S. Attorney’s office. By noon, the federal marshals will have an arrest warrant for Emily and Ryan."

"And Ryan?" my mother asked, her voice devoid of any warmth or maternal hesitation. "Will he stay quiet?"

"Ryan is facing twenty years for domestic assault and money laundering," Alexander laughed softly. "His lawyer—me—will advise him to take a plea bargain. He'll take the fall, thinking he’s protecting Emily. By the time he realizes Emily is also being indicted, we'll be in Dubai."

I stepped out of the shadows and into the doorway of the study.

"That's a very detailed plan, Mom," I said, my voice echoing across the high ceilings. "Too bad it ends right here."

My mother turned around slowly. She was dressed in an elegant silk blouse, holding a glass of scotch. She didn't look surprised. She looked disappointed.

"Sarah," she said smoothly, setting her glass down on the desk. "I knew that foolish detective instinct of yours would bring you here. You always had to play the hero."

Beside her, Alexander Vance—a slick man in his late fifties with silver hair—immediately reached for a drawer in the desk.

"Touch that drawer, Uncle Alex, and I put a bullet through your shoulder," I said, pointing my Glock directly at his forehead.

Alexander froze, his hands hovering in mid-air.

"Sarah, lower the weapon," my mother said, stepping in front of her brother. "You don't understand the scope of what is happening. This isn't some petty crime. This is survival. If these funds aren't moved tonight, people far more dangerous than the police will come for this family."

"You framed your own daughter!" I shouted, the emotion finally breaking through my professional exterior. "Emily is in the hospital right now! She’s eight months pregnant, having premature contractions because the man you set her up with beat her within an inch of her life!"

My mother’s eyes flickered with a brief, almost imperceptible shadow of guilt, but her expression hardened again instantly. "Ryan was a tool that became unstable. I didn't tell him to lay a hand on her. That was his own panic."

"You put her name on those shell companies!"

"Because nobody suspects a quiet, pregnant woman!" my mother snapped back. "She was protected! She was supposed to sign the bankruptcy filings and take a suspended sentence! We had legal teams ready to ensure she never served a day in prison!"

"You sacrificed her life for money!"

"I built this family's wealth!" my mother yelled, her face contorting with rage. "Everything you have, the life you lived, came from the choices I made! You think your little badge makes you righteous, Sarah? You live in a world paid for by compromise!"

"No," I said, taking a step closer, my hand steady on the trigger. "I live in a world where actions have consequences. Put your hands behind your head. Both of you."

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors leading to the outdoor terrace shattered inward.

Two men in black tactical gear burst into the room, automatic weapons raised. They weren't my mother's men.

"Drop the weapon!" one of them barked in a heavy foreign accent.

Marcus Vance—Ryan's older brother—stepped through the broken glass, holding a silenced pistol. He looked disheveled, wet from the rain, his eyes wild with desperate rage.

"Nobody moves!" Marcus spat, pointing his gun directly at my mother. "You tried to cut me out, Helena! You thought you could take the master key and leave me to take the hit with the cartel?"

The room became a Mexican standoff. Me with my gun on Alexander, Marcus with his gun on my mother, and Marcus's hired mercenaries covering the room.

My mother didn't flinch. She looked at Marcus with utter contempt. "You were always sloppy, Marcus. Just like your brother."

"Shut up!" Marcus screamed. "Give me the flash drive, or I tear this house apart!"

"It’s over, Marcus," I said calmly, shifting my focus slightly to keep Marcus in my sight. "The police know everything. The hospital is guarded. Ryan is in custody. FBI federal agents are already en route to this address."

Marcus sneered at me. "Then I guess I don't have much to lose, Detective."

He raised his gun toward my chest.
