Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Knot

I didn't pause to think. I acted on pure instinct.

I threw myself forward, wrapping my arms around both the girls and their mother, using my entire body as a shield against the descending darkness. The second my skin made contact with the icy black mist surrounding Sarah, an agonizing shockwave of raw emotional trauma crashed directly into my mind.

I saw the fire.

I felt the suffocating heat of a blazing house. I heard the roar of flames swallowing wooden beams and the distant, helpless wail of sirens. I felt the crushing, unbearable realization that the man trapped upstairs was never coming out alive. I experienced the mother's absolute, paralyzing despair—the exact moment her mind snapped, and she wished with all her soul to feel nothing ever again.

That wish was the door she had opened for the shadow.

"It hurts!" I screamed, tears burning down my cheeks as her memories tore through my consciousness. "I know it hurts! But you can't leave them alone in the fire!"

Sarah looked down at me, then down at her two tiny daughters clinging to her waist, refusing to let go even as the frost bit into their bare hands.

"Lily... Clara..." she murmured. The black veins covering her skin began to fracture, glowing with a soft, intense gold light from within.

"You remember us?" Clara whispered, looking up through her tears.

"I remember," Sarah said. Her voice was no longer distorted by the entity. It was pure, fragile, and overflowing with human grief. "I remember the fire... I remember your father's hand... and I remember leaving you behind because I was too weak to carry the pain."

She dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around her daughters, pulling them against her chest.

As she embraced her children and finally accepted the unbearable truth of her loss, a blinding golden light erupted from her heart. The light swept through the cabin like a wave of pure heat, melting the frost on the walls and instantly burning away the black mist.

The shadow entity gave one final, helpless shriek as it was unraveled by the power of a mother’s restored love, dissolving into nothingness in the morning air.

The heavy, suffocating pressure in the room vanished completely.
