PART 2 The Empire They Thought They Had Already Stolen

The chief financial officer didn't waste a single second.

"Amelia," Daniel Whitmore said, his voice tight with concern, "please tell me you haven't signed the acquisition authorization Ethan emailed yesterday."

I frowned.

"What acquisition?"

A long silence.

Then Daniel inhaled sharply.

"Oh, God."

He explained everything.

Three months earlier, Ethan had approached the executive team claiming I wanted to "step away from daily operations" to focus on family life.

He presented forged meeting notes.

Forged board approvals.

Even emails that looked as though they had come from me.

Daniel admitted he never believed them.

"They weren't written in your voice," he said. "I delayed every transaction I legally could."

My pulse raced.

"How much were they trying to move?"

"Almost everything."

Hartwell Designs wasn't simply a fashion company.

It owned factories.

Licensing agreements.

Commercial properties.

Investment portfolios.

The total value exceeded six hundred million dollars.

If Ethan succeeded, my father's life's work would disappear.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"There's one more thing."

"I'm listening."

"Ethan scheduled a board meeting for Monday."

"So?"

"He's bringing documents authorizing him to become Executive Chairman."

I stared out the window.

Monday.

He planned to return from Miami with his pregnant mistress... and steal my company before I even understood what was happening.

He truly believed I would sign.

Just like always.

Except this time...

I already knew.

Margaret Reed arrived at my house within an hour.

She spread dozens of documents across my father's old desk.

"Here's the good news," she said.

"Please tell me there is some."

"There is."

She smiled.

"Your father never trusted Ethan."

I looked up.

"What?"

Margaret slid a thick trust agreement toward me.

Three years earlier, my father had quietly amended Hartwell Designs' ownership structure.

No spouse.

No in-law.

No proxy.

No outside executive...

...could ever assume control without my personal appearance before the board and two independent trustees.

Every forged signature.

Every fraudulent document.

Every hidden transfer...

Was legally worthless.

For the first time since Logan Airport...

I smiled.

"They never actually owned anything."

"No."

Margaret smiled back.

"They've simply been committing fraud."

Monday morning arrived.

The boardroom overlooked downtown Boston.

Twelve directors sat around the polished walnut table.

Daniel greeted me with relief.

"They're already inside."

I walked in wearing a navy suit my father had once called my armor.

Ethan froze.

His smile vanished.

"Amelia?"

Margaret stood beside me carrying three thick binders.

Richard slowly lowered his coffee cup.

Madison looked as though she'd seen a ghost.

Ethan recovered quickly.

"Sweetheart...what a surprise."

I almost laughed.

Sweetheart.

Only four days earlier he'd kissed another woman in an airport.

Now he wanted to play husband.

"I decided to attend."

His eyes narrowed.

"We've already prepared everything."

"I know."

I sat at the head of the table.

"My meeting now."

Silence filled the room.

Margaret stood.

"I represent Amelia Hartwell Caldwell."

She placed photographs on the table.

The airport.

The kisses.

The pregnancy.

The family celebration.

Every director stared.

Ethan's face turned white.

Then came the bank records.

The forged emails.

The altered board minutes.

The attempted asset transfers.

Daniel quietly pushed a forensic accounting report across the table.

Page after page.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Breach of fiduciary duty.

Conspiracy.

No one spoke.

Finally Richard stood.

"This is a misunderstanding."

Margaret smiled coldly.

"No."

She opened the final binder.

"This is evidence."

An hour later security escorted Ethan from the building.

He never looked back.

That evening my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Instead...

I answered.

A trembling female voice whispered,

"My name is Tessa."

May you like

There was a long pause.

"I think Ethan lied to both of us."
