Chapter 8 - A Legacy Restored
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When they returned, the verdict was unanimous.
Gail Merritt: Guilty on all counts, including Aggravated Child Abuse, Kidnapping, Attempted Murder, and Fraud. Sentence: Life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Holt Merritt: Guilty of Complicity to Child Abuse and Kidnapping. Sentence: 30 years in state penitentiary.
Derek Merritt: Guilty of Child Endangerment, Custody Fraud, and Grand Theft. Sentence: 20 years in state penitentiary.
As the judge read the sentences, Gail burst into loud hysterics, screaming that she was a good Christian woman who was being persecuted. The bailiffs promptly handcuffed her and led her away. Derek was dragged out next, staring at the floor in shame.
I stood outside the courthouse steps, surrounded by reporters holding microphones.
"Mrs. Vance! How do you feel about the verdict?" one reporter shouted.
I looked into the cameras, knowing that somewhere, someday, Brinley might see this footage.
"Justice was served today," I said calmly. "But the real victory isn't in that courtroom. The real victory is at home, where my daughter is learning to live, play, and be loved again. The people who tried to break her failed."

With the legal battle over, the state awarded me sole, unassailable legal and physical custody of Brinley. The court also ordered the full seizure of the Merritt family's assets, including their house and bank accounts, which were placed into a trust fund for Brinley's future education and medical care.
We sold the dark, terrible house in Dayton and erased every trace of the Merritt name from our lives.
