Chapter 6 - Total Freezing Point

The interior of the Downtown Trust was magnificent—high vaulted ceilings, marble floors that echoed with every footstep, and long rows of polished brass teller windows. The air was thick with the scent of old money and security.

I walked in quietly, flanked by Abigail and an undercover officer named Detective Harris. We took a position behind a large marble pillar near the entrance to the private wealth management wing.

Through the glass partition of the vault lobby, I could see Brandon and Linda. They were standing in front of Thomas, the branch manager. Linda was presenting a fake driver’s license—an incredibly high-quality forgery bearing my name but her photo, or perhaps a modified version of my father's old authorization documents.

Thomas didn't blink. He smiled warmly, nodded, and typed something into his terminal. He was playing his part perfectly. He acted as though everything was completely routine.

"Right this way, Mrs. Pendelton," Thomas said, his voice carrying slightly through the quiet room. He used my name intentionally. I could see the disgust flit across Linda’s face at being called by my name, but her greed quickly washed it away.

An armed security guard unlocked the heavy steel gate, and Thomas led Brandon and Linda into the private vault corridor.

Minutes ticked by like hours. My heart pounded against my ribs, not with fear, but with an intense, burning anticipation.

Ten minutes later, the door to the vault corridor opened.

Linda came out first. Her face was flushed with a triumphant, ugly joy. Her large leather bag was visibly heavier, bulging at the seams with thick stacks of bearer bonds, historical stock certificates, and velvet bags containing the raw gold bullion my father had kept as an inflation hedge. Brandon followed close behind, a smug, arrogant smirk plastered across his face. He actually reached out and patted the security guard on the shoulder as he walked past.

They thought they had won. They thought they were free.

They walked quickly across the marble main floor, heading directly toward the heavy brass exit doors. They were less than twenty feet away from freedom.

"Now," I whispered.

Detective Harris stepped out from behind the pillar, blocking their path. Simultaneously, three men in dark suits stepped forward from the teller lines, cutting off their retreat.

"Brandon Sterling? Linda Sterling?" Detective Harris called out, his voice booming through the cavernous bank lobby. "State Police. Step away from the bags and put your hands where I can see them."

Brandon froze, his face draining of all color instantly. "What... what is the meaning of this? There must be some mistake. I am the CEO of Pendelton Construction!"

"There is no mistake, Brandon," a voice called out.

Brandon and Linda whirled around.

I stepped out from behind the marble pillar. I stood tall, my shoulders back, looking directly at them. My bruised face was fully visible under the bright fluorescent lights of the bank. I didn't hide it. I wanted them to see exactly what they had done, and I wanted everyone in this bank to see it too.

Linda gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You... you miserable little cockroach! How dare you—"

"Shut up, Linda," I said, my voice incredibly calm, cold, and clear. "The game is over. The accounts are frozen. The house is locked. And that bag in your hand contains exactly five point two million dollars of stolen property belonging to the Arthur Pendelton Estate. Property that you just obtained using a forged identification and a fraudulent signature."

"Clara, honey, let’s talk about this," Brandon stammered, taking a step toward me, his hands raised in a fake gesture of peace. His eyes were wide with a desperate, pathetic terror. "Last night... last night was an accident. I was stressed. The business... we can fix this. We're a family."

"We were never a family, Brandon," I said, looking at him with nothing but pure pity. "You were just a parasite. And today, the host is clean."
