Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Computer Lab

The revelation struck me like a physical blow. Embezzlement? Athletic grants? None of this sounded like the typical playground cruelty I had imagined when I first saw the bruise on Emma's arm. It was a conspiracy deeply rooted in the administrative ranks of our local school district—and my ten-year-old daughter had accidentally stumbled right into the middle of it.
Detective Miller unfolded a second document from David's stash, his eyes narrowing as he reviewed the printouts of encrypted chat logs and financial transfer records.
“You hacked into the school district’s secure server, Mr. Lawson?” Detective Miller asked, his voice carrying a warning weight. “You realize that obtaining evidence through unauthorized digital intrusion is a serious federal offense.”
“Do whatever you want to me legally after my daughter is safe,” David replied flatly, his gaze never leaving mine. “Charge me with data breach, lock me up, fine me. I don’t care. Look at the timestamps on those logs, Detective. The physical bullying started two days after Emma walked in on Principal Henderson’s daughter, Chloe, and two senior board members falsifying equipment invoices in the media lab.”
I felt the room tilt. I remembered that exact week. Emma had come home quiet, pale, and claiming she had a stomachache. She had spent the entire evening locked in her room, refusing to talk about school. I had assumed it was just a passing bug.
“She told you?” I whispered to David, my throat tight.
“She didn't want to tell me at first,” David said, stepping closer, his voice softening. “She was terrified. Chloe threatened that if she ever told a single soul about the financial records she saw on the computer monitor, they would make her life at school a living hell. And they kept their promise. They recruited three older girls to isolate her, corner her, and inflict physical injuries that looked like ordinary playground accidents—all to break her spirit so she would transfer out of the district voluntarily.”
Detective Miller lowered the papers, his expression grim. “If this digital trail is authentic, Mr. Lawson, you’ve uncovered systemic corruption and targeted intimidation of a minor. But possessing this isn't enough. We need the physical backups, and we need to secure the original server logs before the district realizes their network was accessed.”
“The backups are encrypted on an external flash drive in my laptop bag at home,” David answered immediately. “And as for the physical evidence at the school... tomorrow morning at 8:00 A.M., the school board is holding an open public budget hearing in the main auditorium. Every single administrator involved will be in that room.”

A heavy silence fell over the hallway. The pieces of David’s dangerous puzzle finally snapped into place. He hadn't been waiting idly; he had been orchestrating a massive exposure of the entire corrupt administration, using Emma’s documented medical injuries as the undeniable catalyst.
“We can’t wait for tomorrow morning,” Detective Miller said decisively, pulling out his radio. “If the district administration catches wind of an impending audit or police inquiry, they’ll wipe those servers clean within the hour. Officer Jenkins, secure Mr. Lawson’s vehicle and retrieve that flash drive immediately. Mrs. Lawson, you stay here with your daughter. We are moving in on the school tonight.”
