Chapter 9 - THE PROMISE KEPT

The afternoon sun dipped lower in the western sky, casting long, golden ribbons of light across the dining room table where the four of them sat enjoying slices of warm apple pie.
Rosa took a sip of her coffee, looking around the cozy, beautifully decorated room with genuine admiration. “It still amazes me how far everything has come since that night at St. Catherine’s. Sometimes I look back at the charts and I feel like I lived through a movie.”
“It wasn't a movie, Rosa,” Audrey said softly, reaching across the table to gently squeeze Ellie’s hand where it rested next to her plate. “It was real. Every single terrifying, wonderful second of it.”
Ellie looked up from her pie, her dark eyes shining with quiet contentment. She reached down beside her chair, picking up the large, worn leather purse that now sat safely on a small wooden stand near the doorway. It had been cleaned and polished, the dark stain on the strap faded into history, but it remained there as a reminder of where they had started.
“Do you remember what you told me when you gave me this, Audrey?” Ellie asked quietly.
Audrey smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “I told you that we were going to keep each other safe, no matter what.”
“And you did,” Ellie whispered, leaning over to wrap her arms around Audrey’s waist in a tight, affectionate hug. “You came back for me.”
Hannah watched the interaction, feeling a profound wave of peace settle deep into her chest. In the fast-paced, often chaotic world of emergency medicine, doctors and nurses saw humanity at its most broken and desperate hours. But every once in a long while, out of the darkest storms, something truly miraculous emerged—a bond forged in crisis that proved some lights could never be put out.

“To new beginnings,” Hannah raised her coffee cup with a warm, glowing smile.
“To new beginnings,” Rosa, Audrey, and Ellie chorused together, their voices blending into a harmonious chord of joy that echoed softly through the peaceful, sunlit home.
