Chapter 6 - The Long Road to Healing

Two weeks later, I sat in the sunlit recovery ward of the federal medical center in Washington, D.C.
The room smelled of antiseptic and fresh tulips that Colonel Cole’s team had delivered that morning. Anna was propped up against a mountain of pillows, her right arm free of its cast, slowly learning how to hold a pencil again. Her left leg was still elevated in a traction rig, but the dark purple bruises along her face had faded into soft shades of yellow and green.
She was drawing. Small, intricate sketches of birds taking flight against an open sky.
I sat in the chair beside her bed, peeling an orange for her.
“Dad?” she asked softly, not looking up from her sketchbook.
“Yeah, sweetie?”
“Is it really over? Do we ever have to go back to Blackwood Ridge?”
I set the orange slices down on a clean napkin and gently placed my hand over her uninjured fingers.
“We never have to go back there again, Anna,” I promised, my voice steady and warm. “The house is gone. The estate is being seized by the federal government to fund domestic abuse survivor programs across the state. Your uncles are awaiting federal trial with no possibility of bail, and your grandfather will never walk free again.”
Anna stopped drawing. She looked up at me, her big, clear eyes shimmering with unshed tears, but for the first time in weeks, there was no shadow of terror behind them.
“And Mom?” she whispered.
I took a slow breath. “Dahlia is cooperating with the prosecution. She’ll face her own day in court for her silence. But you don't ever have to worry about her, or them, or anyone else ever again. I’m right here. I’m not going back overseas. I’m staying right beside you.”
Anna let out a long, trembling breath—the kind of exhale that came from a soul finally shedding an unbearable weight. She leaned over, burying her face against my shoulder, and wrapped her good arm around my neck.

“Thank you for coming back, Dad,” she cried softly.
“I’ll always come back for you,” I whispered, holding my little girl tighter than I ever had in my life.
