Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By noon, Kara had checked into a modest, sunlit extended-stay apartment three neighborhoods away from the wreckage of their old home. It wasn't the luxury suite Mason was currently enjoying with Sloane, but it had clean sheets, a working stove, and a lock on the door that only she possessed. She had used a discreet cash reserve—money she had quietly saved from freelance editing jobs over the past two years, hidden away precisely because a quiet instinct had warned her that dependence was a trap.

She sat at the small laminate kitchen table with her laptop open. Her first call was not to Mason, nor was it to her mother-in-law, Eleanor, who viewed Kara as a lower-class interloper who had trapped a Bennett heir. Instead, Kara dialed the number of Sarah Jenkins, the most ferocious family law and corporate asset recovery attorney in the city.

Sarah’s firm was located in the sleek glass towers downtown, a stone’s throw from Mason’s family real estate headquarters. When Kara walked into her office two hours later, wearing her only unblemished blazer and carrying a sleek black folder, Sarah looked up from her dual monitors with sharp, discerning eyes.

"Tell me everything, Kara," Sarah said, motioning toward the leather chair across her desk. "And start with why you aren't crying."

Kara placed the black folder on the glass surface and opened it. Inside were the screen recordings of Sloane’s Instagram story, the time-stamped call logs from the insurance company, the audio transcript of Mason’s deceit, and the metadata of the photograph taken beneath the gymnasium basketball hoop.

"I used up all my tears last night," Kara said calmly, her voice steady and chillingly clear. "Now, I want a divorce, full custody of my son, and a financial audit of every single asset Mason and his family’s company own. I want to know every property, every offshore account, and every corporate slush fund they’ve used to hide money."

Sarah opened the folder. As her eyes scanned the digital proofs, a slow, predatory smile spread across the attorney's lips. She clicked play on the audio file of Mason’s voice lying to the insurance adjuster, then watched Sloane Avery shouting “You always find the perfect place for me” while holding a glass of champagne next to a welcome card bearing a four-year-old boy's name.

"Oh, honey," Sarah breathed, leaning back in her chair. "Your husband is not just unfaithful. He is profoundly, staggeringly stupid. He left a paper trail wide enough to land a Boeing 747 on."

"He thinks he’s untouchable," Kara replied. "His family has spent generations buying judges, covering up scandals, and making problems disappear. He assumes I’ll fold because I don't have their bank account."

"His family’s money is tied up in commercial real estate, trusts, and corporate holdings," Sarah said, her fingers already flying across her keyboard. "And guess who happens to be a junior partner whose name is on several high-risk commercial loans? Mason. If we file an emergency injunction for financial preservation and expose this fraud to the primary investors, his father’s board will chew him up and spit him out before he can even pack his golf clubs."

"I don't just want a settlement, Sarah," Kara said, locking eyes with the attorney. "I want to make sure he never has the financial leverage to use Liam as a pawn against me. I want his professional reputation dismantled to the exact degree he tried to dismantle mine."

Sarah closed the folder, slid it into a secure vault behind her desk, and stood up, extending her hand across the mahogany. "Welcome to the war, Kara. Let’s go skin a Bennett."
