Chapter 7 - Sanctuary in the Dark

The coastal hangar was a massive, weathered structure of corrugated steel, sitting at the edge of an abandoned private airstrip overlooking the gray, churning ocean. Rain lashed against the metal roof with a deafening roar.
Inside, a sleek Gulfstream jet sat with its engines idling, the high-pitched whine of the turbines drowning out the sound of the storm outside.
Arthur Vane—wearing the tailored coat of Grant Whitmore—walked briskly across the concrete floor, holding Owen tightly by the wrist. The boy stumbled behind him, his small face pale and wet with tears, but his jaw set in quiet defiance.
"You're making this far more difficult than it needs to be, Owen," Vane said, his voice cold, stripped of the fatherly warmth he performed for the cameras. "You could have had everything. Wealth, security, a legacy."
"You killed him," Owen spat, trying to pull his arm free. "You're a monster."
Vane stopped, kneeling down so his eyes were level with the boy's. Up close, beneath the faint surgical lines near his hairline, his expression was utterly devoid of human warmth.
"Your father was a weak man who wanted to shut down our research," Vane whispered softly. "He was going to ruin everything we built. I preserved his empire. I preserved you. But if you cannot play your part, Owen, you become a liability."
He stood up and nodded to one of his armed security personnel standing near the airstrip stairs. "Put him in the cabin. Lock the door."
Before the guard could step forward, the heavy double doors of the hangar were smashed open as a heavy black pickup truck crashed through the wooden barricade, skidding across the slick concrete floor and coming to a halt directly between the jet and the exit.
The truck door flew open. Jim Miller stepped out, a heavy service pistol held low at his side, while Mara leapt from the passenger seat.
"Vane!" Miller's voice boomed across the vast, echoing space. "State police are three minutes behind us! Stand down!"
Vane didn't panic. He slowly raised one hand, and four private security officers immediately drew their weapons, creating a perimeter around the aircraft.
"Detective Miller," Vane said smoothly, stepping behind Owen and placing a heavy hand on the boy's shoulder. "You are trespassing on private aviation property. And you are severely out of your depth."
"It's over, Vane," Mara called out, stepping into the open, holding up her phone displaying the encrypted lab results. "We have the genomic sequencing. We know who you are. The hospital records, the DNA match from the blood on Owen's hands—it's already been transmitted to the State Attorney General and the Department of Justice."
Vane’s eyes flickered, a momentary shadow of doubt crossing his featureless, sculpted face.
"You're bluffing," Evelyn Mercer's voice came from the shadow of the jet's stairway as she stepped into view. "The court order stands. Dr. Ellison is an escaped fugitive under medical suspension."
"Check your phone, Evelyn," Miller said grimly. "The federal warrant was signed fifteen minutes ago. The coast guard has already grounded your flight path."
At that moment, the wail of sirens cut through the roar of the storm outside, red and blue lights flashing against the fogged windows of the hangar.
Vane’s expression finally shattered. The calm, aristocratic facade of Grant Whitmore melted away, revealing the desperate, cornered killer beneath. He grabbed Owen by the jacket, pulling the boy toward the jet stairs.
"Get the engines to full!" Vane shouted to the pilot. "We leave now!"
"NO!" Owen screamed.
With a sudden, furious burst of strength, the boy dropped his weight, biting down hard on Vane’s wrist. Vane hissed in pain, his grip loosening for a split second.
Owen broke free.
"Mara!" the boy cried out, running across the concrete toward her.
"Owen!" Mara sprinted forward, ignoring the weapons drawn around her.

Vane reached into his coat, pulling a small silver pistol from his pocket and leveling it directly at the fleeing child. "If I can't have the dynasty, no one will," he snarled.
BANG.
