Part 2: The Backup Plan

The emergency lights flickered on seconds after the hospital went dark.
A red glow washed over the corridor, turning every face into a shadow.
Emily grabbed my wrist.
“Mom, they know where we are.”
I looked toward the nurses' station. Staff members were scrambling, checking equipment and making phone calls. The blackout seemed real—but after the message on the mysterious phone, I couldn't believe in coincidences anymore.
I showed the text to the attending physician.
His face tightened immediately.
“Stay here,” he said.
“Doctor, what does it mean?” I demanded.
Instead of answering, he handed the phone to hospital security.
That's when another message arrived.
The father and brother are isolated. Proceed immediately.
My blood ran cold.
I called my husband, David.
No answer.
I called Noah.
Nothing.
Emily began crying.
“They went to the lake house yesterday,” she whispered. “Ryan insisted they go fishing this weekend. He even paid for the trip.”
The realization hit me like a punch.
Ryan hadn't just wanted Emily under control.
He wanted our entire family separated.
The doctor returned moments later.
“Mrs. Carter, I need you to come with me.”
He led us into a private office and closed the door.
Then he revealed something that made my knees nearly buckle.
The phone belonged to a medical consulting company currently under federal investigation.
Several wealthy families had reported suspicious attempts to obtain control of family trusts, estates, and property holdings.
In every case, forged legal documents appeared with astonishing accuracy.
Signatures.
Three signatures.
The words from the text suddenly made sense.
Someone wanted legal authorization for something.
Something worth millions.
Emily stared at the doctor.
“What does that have to do with us?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Your grandfather's estate.”
The room fell silent.
My father had died six months earlier.
His assets—including land, investments, and the lake property—were held in a family trust.
Major changes required three family signatures:
Mine.
David's.
And Emily's.
Someone wasn't targeting Emily.
They were targeting the inheritance.
At that moment, my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A terrified voice shouted through static.
“Mom!”
It was Noah.
“Three men are here!”
The call ended with a crash.
Then silence.
Emily screamed.
Without thinking, I grabbed my keys.
We were going to the lake house.

Whether the police approved or not.
Because my husband and son might already be fighting for their lives.
