Chapter 10 - The Horizon Clear and Bright

Spring returned to Massachusetts with an explosion of dogwood blossoms and crisp, clean morning air. One year had passed since the day the photograph on a phone screen had shattered Anna Mercer’s old life and forced her into a battle for survival.

The legal battles were entirely behind them now. The final divorce decree had been fully executed, granting Anna sole ownership of Hawthorne House, absolute custody of Ruby, and a financial settlement that secured their future indefinitely. Michael had faded entirely into the periphery of their existence, a cautionary tale of arrogance and deceit whose choices had cost him everything he purported to value.

On a Saturday morning in late May, the temperature outside climbed toward a comfortable seventy-five degrees—warm, pleasant, and completely harmless. The central air hummed quietly in the background, a steady, dependable heartbeat beneath the life they had reclaimed.

Anna sat on the back patio with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, reviewing financial briefs for her upcoming cases at the firm. The sunlight filtered through the young maples lining the yard, casting dappled shadows across the stone pavers.

Ruby ran across the lawn, chasing a bright red bubble wand, her laughter echoing through the garden. She stopped, turned toward the patio, and waved excitedly.

“Mommy! Come play!”

May you like

Anna smiled, setting her tablet down on the patio table. She stood up, brushed off her skirt, and walked out across the green grass toward her daughter. As she scooped Ruby up into her arms, spinning her around while the little girl squealed with delight, Anna looked up at the clear, boundless blue sky.

The heat had once been their greatest enemy, a weapon used to suffocate and control. Now, it was just another part of a world they owned on their own terms—safe, protected, and entirely free.
