Chapter 8 - Healing the Past

The transition didn't happen overnight, but the shift in our household dynamic was miraculous.
True to our word, we moved Eleanor into the room directly adjacent to Lily’s. The long, shadowy hallway that had once felt like a corridor of haunting secrets was now filled with warmth, soft lighting, and the gentle chatter of three generations living under one roof.
We also implemented a new nighttime routine. Every evening before bed, the four of us—Nathan, Eleanor, Lily, and I—would sit in the living room and read a story together. Nathan made sure Eleanor took her evening supplements, and I made sure her room was cozy, well-lit, and secure.
For the first few weeks, Eleanor still woke up disoriented a couple of times. The security camera—which we kept active for her safety—captured her stepping out of her room at 2:00 AM. But instead of wandering blindly into Lily’s room in the dark, something wonderful happened.
Because her new room was right next door, and because the door was left slightly ajar with a soft nightlight glowing in the hallway, Eleanor would often stop, look at the familiar doorway, and realize where she was.
And on the nights when the past still pulled too hard at her heart, she didn't have to sneak in like a ghost anymore.
One night, around 2:15 AM, I checked the camera feed out of habit.
The door to Lily’s room was open. Eleanor was standing by the bedside, her hand resting gently on the blanket. But this time, Lily’s eyes fluttered open. She didn't look scared. Instead, she smiled sleepily, sat up, and patted the mattress beside her.
“Hi, Grandma,” Lily whispered softly, her voice thick with sleep. “Do you want to sleep here tonight?”
On the screen, I watched Eleanor hesitate, wiping a stray tear from her cheek before whispering back, “I’d love to, sweetheart.”

She climbed into the bed, and Lily immediately snuggled right up against her side, completely comfortable, entirely safe.
Watching from my phone screen downstairs, I didn't cry tears of shock or fear this time. I smiled, feeling a deep, abiding warmth fill my chest. The ghosts of the past hadn't vanished entirely, but they had finally found a place to rest.
