Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Scalpel

The steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of the fetal monitor didn't just change; it dropped off a cliff. The sound became a long, agonizing, continuous drone of decelerations.

"Cord prolapse," Ethan said. The vulnerability that had softened his face a second ago vanished, replaced instantly by the icy, terrifying precision of a chief resident. "Linda, call a stat C-section. Get O-negative on standby. Code Green in OR three!"

The room erupted into a controlled hurricane. Linda slammed her palm against the emergency button on the wall. The second nurse began ripping open sterile packs, the sharp tear of plastic sounding like gunfire in my ears.

"Ethan?" My voice was no longer angry. It was small. The anger had been a luxury of a normal labor. Now, the cold claw of primal terror gripped my throat. "Ethan, what’s happening?"

"The umbilical cord has slipped ahead of the baby, Chloe," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he climbed onto the edge of my bed. Before I could process what he was doing, he inserted two gloved fingers, pushing upward with immense force. "I am lifting the baby's head off the cord. If I don't, the baby loses oxygen. I cannot let go of this position until we cut."

"No, no, no..." Tears finally spilled over my temples, soaking into my tangled hair.

"Look at me, Chloe," Ethan commanded, his face mere inches from mine. His hands were locked in place, his muscles straining against the awkward angle. "Look at my eyes. Focus on me. I am not going to let anything happen to our baby. Do you hear me? Look at me."

"You said our baby," I whispered, the room spinning as Linda rushed to unlock the brakes of my bed.

"Yes. Mine. Yours. Ours," Ethan slammed his jaw shut, his eyes burning with a fierce, desperate protectiveness I hadn't seen since the day he defended his medical thesis. "But right now, he needs to get out. Breathe for him, Chloe. Deep breaths."

The doors to the labor room flew open, crashing against the rubber bumpers on the walls. The hallway became a blur of flashing lights, passing ceiling tiles, and shouting voices.

"Prep the abdomen! Is the anesthesiologist in the room?" Ethan shouted as we sprinted down the corridor, his body leaning precariously over my moving bed to maintain the pressure on the cord.

"I'm here!" a voice called out as we burst into the blinding, metallic glare of the operating room.

The cold air hit my bare skin, making me shiver violently. Within seconds, a mask was pressed over my face. The sweet, chemical scent of gas began to cloud my senses.

"Ethan," I choked out, fighting the heavy darkness pulling at the edges of my vision. I reached out blindly.

His free left hand caught mine. His grip was fiercely tight, his knuckles white. "I'm right here. I'm not leaving you. Sleep now, Chloe. When you wake up, it will be over."

The last thing I saw before the darkness swallowed me entirely was the sight of my ex-husband, his eyes brimming with unshed tears, holding onto me as if his own life depended on the breath in my lungs.
