Chapter 2 - Shadows in the X-RayDr. Patel led me into a quiet consultation room, closing the door firmly behind us. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed, casting a pale glow across the radiology screen mounted on the wall. He pointed to a small, dark shadow near Emma’s ribs.

"This is a healing fracture," Dr. Patel said, his voice measured. "It's roughly ten to fourteen days old. A fall from tonight couldn't cause this. Someone squeezed her frame with extreme force long before tonight."

A cold weight settled in my chest. Ten days ago, I had returned to work part-time, leaving Emma in the care of Ryan and Diane. Whenever I questioned her sudden, inconsolable crying spells upon my return, Ryan had brushed it off as colic, insisting his mother knew best. Now, the quiet horror of those missing hours lined up like a mathematical certainty. Ryan hadn't just been passive—he had been covering for her.

The heavy door burst open. Ryan stood in the entryway, out of breath, his hi-vis work jacket half-unzipped. His eyes darted nervously between me, the doctor, and the scans on the screen.

"Maya, what the hell is going on?" Ryan stammered, stepping forward. "Mom called me crying. She said you snapped, that you dropped Emma on purpose because of postpartum stress—"

"Stop lying, Ryan," I cut in, my voice deadlier and calmer than I had ever known it to be. "The doctors found an old fracture. Two weeks old. Who was watching her while I was at the office?"

Ryan flinched, his eyes dropping to the floor. The color drained completely from his face. He didn't ask how Emma was doing. He didn't ask to see her. He reached for his phone, his thumb flying across the screen to text his mother.

"She told you to keep quiet, didn't she?" I asked.

Before he could answer, two uniformed police officers stepped into the room. Dr. Patel nodded to them, stepping aside. I handed my phone to the lead officer, showing him the threatening text message Diane had sent just minutes earlier.

"Ryan Carter," the officer said, stepping toward my husband. "We need you to come down to the station for questioning regarding a report of felony child abuse and domestic battery."

Ryan looked at me, a desperate plea in his eyes, but I turned my back on him and walked toward the Intensive Care Unit to be with my daughter.
