PART 2 — The Camera Recorded the Truth They Couldn't Escape

Officer Nolan Price didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he held out his hand.

"The original file."

I unlocked my phone and emailed the untouched recording directly from the security app.

"No edits," I said. "It uploads automatically to cloud storage."

Grant's confidence faded just enough for me to notice.

The officer handed the video to the hospital's digital evidence technician, who confirmed the metadata within minutes.

Timestamp.

GPS location.

Original audio.

Nothing had been altered.

Grant folded his arms.

"So? Kids say strange things when they're scared."

Officer Price looked at him without blinking.

"They usually don't invent security codes."

Grant opened his mouth.

Closed it again.

Then another officer entered carrying a tablet.

"We've spoken to the responding deputies at the residence."

Grant frowned.

"What residence?"

"Your house."

Celeste's face lost color.

The officer continued.

"The smart lock company remotely logs every code change."

Silence.

"It shows the access code was changed yesterday at 4:18 p.m."

Grant quickly answered.

"I updated it because the cleaning company has the old one."

Officer Price nodded.

"Interesting."

He looked back at the report.

"Because the cleaning service says they hasn't been there in over three weeks."

Grant swallowed.

Celeste stepped forward.

"This is getting blown out of proportion."

Just then, the emergency physician walked into the hallway.

"I need everyone quiet."

He looked directly at Grant.

"Your son has early frostbite in two toes."

The hallway froze.

"He also shows signs of prolonged food deprivation and chronic anxiety."

Grant laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous."

The doctor didn't react.

"When I asked your son whether he feels safe at home..."

He paused.

"...he cried before answering."

No one spoke.

Then Noah's small voice drifted through the partly open hospital door.

"Aunt Meera?"

I walked inside immediately.

He looked terrified.

"Did I make Dad lose his job?"

I knelt beside him.

"No."

His eyes searched mine.

"Is he going to punish me?"

I couldn't answer.

Because no child asks that question unless punishment already feels normal.

Outside the room, Officer Price quietly told another detective,

"Contact Child Protective Services."

Grant heard him.

"What?"

"You can't do that."

May you like

The detective met his eyes.

"We already have."
