Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The digital breadcrumbs didn't stop there. As I dug deeper into the Meridian Foundation wire transfers, a name popped up that blew the entire conspiracy wide open.
The recipient of the monthly hush-money payments wasn't an anonymous offshore account. It was registered to a residential property located just three miles outside the base perimeter: an isolated, heavily fortified veterinary clinic owned by none other than Dr. Marcus Vance, the exact physician who had signed off on baby Emma's fraudulent death certificate six years ago.
My phone rang violently, breaking my concentration. It was Deputy Harris.
"Mrs. Walker? Are you and the baby safe?" Harris's voice sounded urgent, laced with static.
"We're safe, Deputy. But you need to listen to me very carefully," I said, my voice steady and cold. "Ethan’s father just threatened me. He's trying to frame Ethan and force me to sign away Lily. But I found the real paper trail."
"Go ahead," Harris said sharply.
"Emma didn't vanish. She was pronounced dead due to 'acute respiratory failure' at Fort Meridian Hospital six years ago by a Dr. Marcus Vance. But it was a cover-up. Raymond and Linda have been paying Vance ten thousand dollars a month through a front called the Meridian Foundation to keep quiet. And I have the financial records right here on my screen."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. When Harris spoke again, his tone had shifted from skeptical officer to hardened tactical lead.
"Mrs. Walker, do you know what Dr. Vance’s clinic is used for besides animals?"
"What do you mean?"
"It’s an off-the-books holding facility utilized by corrupt elements within the base command for confidential containment," Harris said grimly. "If what you're saying is true, and Emma's death certificate was falsified... there is a very high probability that Emma was never cremated at all."
My breath caught in my throat. "You mean... she might still be alive?"
"We’re assembling a tactical warrant right now," Harris said. "But we need probable cause to raid Vance's clinic tonight. If we go in blind, Raymond’s contacts inside the base MP command will shut us down before we cross the property line."
"I can give you the probable cause," I said instantly.
"How?"
"Ethan's phone," I replied, a dangerous plan forming in my mind. "When the MPs arrested him, they confiscated his personal effects, including his burner phone—the one he used to communicate with his family outside the family group chat. His father texted him an address less than an hour before you arrived at our house. The address of Vance's clinic."

"If you can get that text message decrypted and forwarded to my badge, we have a legal green light for a no-knock raid," Harris said. "Are you willing to help us trap them, Mrs. Walker?"
"I’m not just going to help you trap them," I said, looking at Lily sleeping peacefully in her bassinet. "I’m going to help you put them away for the rest of their lives."
