Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Twenty minutes after the lab results dropped, tires screeched in our driveway.

I was sitting in the living room with my mother and Sarah. Gabriel was asleep upstairs, and the girls were in the backyard playing under the supervision of my sister's teenage daughter, whom we had asked to keep them occupied.

The front door burst open. Julian rushed into the hallway, his face pale, his hair disheveled, holding a printout of the lab results in his trembling hand. He looked frantic, like a man whose carefully constructed reality had just collapsed around him.

"Clara!" he yelled, stepping into the living room. He stopped dead when he saw my mother and Sarah sitting beside me, along with a briefcase sitting on the coffee table.

"Julian," I said calmly, staying seated. "You're knocking very loudly. The baby is sleeping."

"Clara, we need to talk. Right now. In private," he stammered, stepping forward. The arrogant, cold demeanor he had worn in the hospital had vanished entirely. "The... the lab results came back."

"I know," I said. "Gabriel is your son. Just as he was five days ago when you abandoned us in the delivery room."

"Look, I... I made a terrible mistake," Julian began, his voice cracking as he tried to construct a new narrative on the fly. "I was stressed. I was overwhelmed. The pressure of work, the birth, everything... I panicked. I let crazy thoughts get the better of me. Clara, please, you have to understand—I was out of my mind with anxiety. I am so, so sorry."

He took another step toward me, reaching out his hands in a desperate plea for forgiveness. "I love you. I love Gabriel. I love our girls. We can move past this. I'll get therapy. I'll do whatever it takes to fix this."

I didn't flinch. I reached down, opened Eleanor's briefcase, and pulled out a thick blue folder. I placed it quietly on the glass table between us.

"You aren't sorry you doubted me, Julian," I said, my voice dangerously soft. "You're panicked because your plan failed."

Julian froze. "What... what are you talking about?"

"You didn't panic in the delivery room," I continued, looking directly into his eyes. "You spent five months planning that scene. You searched for paternity fraud laws. You consulted an attorney about voiding our prenup. You manufactured a fake suspicion about my trip to Chicago so you could accuse me of cheating, file for divorce on fault grounds, and walk away clean."

Julian’s breath hitched. His eyes darted to the blue folder. "That's... that's insane. Who told you that? That's ridiculous!"

"You left your tablet in my hospital room, Julian," I said.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Every drop of color drained from Julian’s face. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out. The realization hit him like a physical blow: he had left his entire secondary life unprotected, handed directly to the woman he was trying to destroy.

"I saw the texts, Julian," I said, pushing the folder toward him. "I saw the photos of Elena. I saw the pictures of your eight-month-old son. I saw the bank transfers from our joint account into Delaware LLCs to pay for her apartment and his trust fund."

Julian collapsed into the armchair opposite me, his knees literally giving out. He covered his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking.

"Clara... please..." he whispered, his voice weak and trembling. "Please... don't do this."

"I am not doing anything," I replied coldly. "You did this to yourself. You traded your four daughters, your newborn son, and eight years of marriage for a web of lies and a woman who helped you scheme against your own family."

Sarah stood up, opening a second document from her own file. "Julian, as Clara's legal representation, I am serving you with a formal petition for divorce, full legal and physical custody of all five children, maximum child support, spousal maintenance, and an emergency freeze on all personal and corporate assets under your name pending a full forensic audit of the funds you illegally diverted."

Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot, desperate, looking for a shred of the soft, forgiving woman he had taken advantage of for nearly a decade.

"Clara... think of the children," he begged, tears streaming down his face. "Think of our girls! You're going to destroy our family!"

"I am not destroying this family, Julian," I said, standing up and looking down at him with utter contempt. "I am saving my children from a father who viewed them as disposables and used them as pawns. Pack your things. You have twenty minutes to get out of my house before the police enforce the temporary restraining order Eleanor filed this morning."
