Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of False Claims

While Richard was beginning his long, slow path toward personal accountability, Vanessa Cole was unwilling to let her lucrative lifestyle disappear without a fight.
Enraged by the freezing of her assets and the loss of her corporate benefactor, Vanessa filed a fraudulent civil claim against Richard, alleging that he had breached a verbal contract regarding financial support and demanding a settlement of two million dollars to avoid publicizing private correspondence.
It was a classic attempt at extortion, designed to capitalize on Richard's already fragile public image.
However, Vanessa had badly underestimated Sarah Dalton.
Three weeks before the final divorce settlement hearing, Sarah walked into Evelyn Vance’s office with a small USB drive.
"What is this, Sarah?" Evelyn asked, inserting the drive into her computer.
"It's the complete digital backup of Richard’s home laptop," Sarah explained. "I made a mirror copy of his hard drive three days before I left the house."
As Evelyn opened the files, her eyes widened.
The drive contained detailed email correspondence, financial ledgers, and recorded audio files between Vanessa Cole and a rival real estate developer in Portland. The records clearly demonstrated that Vanessa had not merely been Richard's mistress; she had been paid by a rival firm to gain access to Richard's confidential bidding strategies for the Seattle waterfront project.
Vanessa had been using Richard, funneling corporate secrets to his competitors while bleeding his personal bank accounts dry.
"Does Richard know this?" Evelyn asked, astounded by the discovery.
"No," Sarah said calmly. "Richard thought she loved him for his charm. He never realized she was executing an industrial espionage scheme."
"Why didn't you use this during the initial custody hearing?"
"Because it wasn't necessary for protecting Ethan," Sarah replied. "My goal was to secure my son's safety and financial independence, not to ruin Richard entirely. But Vanessa's new lawsuit threatens the financial solvency of the family estate—which directly impacts Ethan's future trust fund. I won't allow her to steal from my son."
The following afternoon, an emergency settlement conference was convened at Evelyn Vance’s office.
Richard sat on one side of the mahogany table with Marcus Chen. Vanessa sat on the other side with her high-priced personal injury lawyer. Sarah sat at the head of the table, composed and serene.
Evelyn Vance didn't waste time on pleasantries. She slid a printout across the table to Vanessa’s attorney.
"These are certified records of communications between Ms. Cole and Apex Holdings," Evelyn said coldly. "They show illegal wire fraud, corporate espionage, and extortion under state law. If Ms. Cole does not withdraw her civil lawsuit against Mr. Dalton within the next ten minutes, we will submit these records directly to the United States Attorney’s Office."
Vanessa’s face drained of color. She grabbed the papers, her hands shaking violently as she scanned the lines of text.
"This... this is private property!" Vanessa gasped.
"It is corporate property belonging to Dalton Development Group, recovered from a joint marital device," Evelyn responded sharply. "Sign the withdrawal motion, Ms. Cole, or prepare for a federal indictment."
Vanessa looked at her attorney, who gave her a single, definitive shake of his head. With a trembling hand, she signed the withdrawal document, grabbed her bag, and fled the office without looking back.
Richard sat frozen in his chair, staring at Sarah in absolute shock.
"She was... she was working for Apex?" Richard whispered, his voice trembling with embarrassment and horror. "She was leaking my bids?"
"Yes, Richard," Sarah said softly, looking at him with genuine sympathy. "She never cared about you. She was using your vanity against you."
Richard buried his face in his hands, completely shattered. The ultimate irony was clear: the woman he had betrayed his family for was a predator who had systematically ruined his career, while the wife he had abandoned had just saved him from financial extinction.

"Why, Sarah?" Richard asked, looking up at her with tears in his eyes. "After everything I did to you... why did you save me from her?"
"I didn't do it for you, Richard," Sarah answered gently. "I did it for Ethan. He deserves a father who has a future, not a father destroyed by his own blind pride."
