Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By 11:00 a.m., the panic inside the Miller household had escalated from a mild tremor into a full-scale earthquake.
Megan waddled into the kitchen, wearing a silk robe and holding her swollen stomach. She looked around at the tense, grim expressions on her mother and brother.
"Why is everyone looking like someone died?" Megan complained, sliding onto a barstool. "And by the way, where is my iced caramel macchiato? Ryan, you promised you’d run out and get it from Starbucks twenty minutes ago."
"Shut up, Megan," Ryan snapped, his hair disheveled, sweat beading on his forehead as he stared blankly at his dead phone screen.
Megan’s jaw dropped. "Excuse me? You’re telling me to shut up? I’m carrying your future niece or nephew, and I asked for a simple coffee! What is wrong with you two?"
"Our accounts are frozen," Carol said, her voice hollow as she stared out the window. "Every single dollar we had access to. Lauren... Lauren and her lawyers locked us out of the bank. They’ve accused us of corporate fraud."
Megan burst out into a loud, incredulous laugh. "Fraud?! Are you kidding me? Lauren doesn't have the spine for that! She’s just a salon worker who cuts hair and complains about being tired! She’s probably just trying to throw a tantrum because we ate her precious lobsters!"
"It’s not a tantrum, Megan!" Ryan exploded, slamming his fist onto the kitchen counter so hard the sugar bowl rattled. "The bank wouldn't even talk to us! They said Vance & Sterling is handling it. Do you know who Vance & Sterling are? They are corporate sharks! They represent multi-million dollar corporations! If they are freezing our assets, it means Lauren has already filed legal papers!"
The reality of the situation finally seemed to dawn on Megan, the color draining from her face. Her voice dropped to a nervous whisper. "Wait... if the accounts are frozen... how are we going to pay the deposit for the baby shower venue today? The venue manager called five minutes ago. They said if the four-thousand-dollar deposit wire doesn't clear by noon, they are giving our reservation to another family!"
As if on cue, Ryan’s phone buzzed aggressively on the counter.
He lunged for it, answering immediately. "Hello? Yes, this is Ryan Miller."
"Mr. Miller," a crisp, professional voice spoke through the speaker. It was the coordinator from The Grand Opal Ballroom. "I’m calling regarding your reservation for the luxury baby shower this coming Saturday. Our accounting department informs us that your wire transfer has been rejected due to insufficient, restricted, or frozen funds. We require immediate payment in full, or we must release the date."
"Wait, please!" Ryan pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "Just give us two hours! There’s a temporary banking glitch—"
"Sir, our policy is strict. Without cleared funds, the contract is voided, and your non-refundable deposit is forfeited," the coordinator said firmly. Beep, beep, beep.
The call disconnected.
Ryan lowered the phone slowly, staring at the wall as the magnitude of their ruin began to sink in. Without Lauren’s income, without the salon’s liquidity, without access to their hidden stash of funds, they were completely, utterly broke.
Worse still, their phone notifications pinged again. This time, it wasn't the bank.
It was the credit card company.
Alert: Your Auto-Pay for your luxury SUV lease has failed due to a declined transaction.
Alert: Your utility payment for electricity has been rejected.
In less than twelve hours, the comfortable, parasitic lifestyle they had built off Lauren’s back was being systematically dismantled piece by piece.
"We need to call her," Carol said, her arrogance completely evaporated, replaced by a desperate, trembling panic. "Ryan, you need to call Lauren right now. Beg her to come back. Apologize. Tell her... tell her whatever she wants to hear!"
Ryan looked at his mother, pride warring with absolute terror in his chest. He picked up his phone, found Lauren’s contact name—which he had saved as Lauren (Salon)—and pressed call.
It rang once. Twice. Three times.
Then, a recorded automated voice came on: The subscriber you are calling is currently unavailable, and your number has been automatically routed to voicemail due to active blocking settings.
Ryan stared at the screen in disbelief. She had blocked him.
May you like
He tried again. Blocked.
He dropped his head into his hands, the cold sweat dripping down his neck. The house was suddenly freezing cold.
