Chapter 9 - A New Foundation

That afternoon, the workshop was filled with the sound of laughter and wood shavings falling like snow around the workbench.
Eleanor sat in the wooden armchair beside the space heater—which was turned off now, replaced by the warm spring breeze drifting through the open double doors.
Lucy sat on a low stool beside her, showing Eleanor how to carve a small wooden bird out of a block of cedar.
“Like this?” Lucy asked, holding up the rough carving.
“Just like that, sweetheart,” Eleanor smiled, her weathered fingers gently guiding the child’s small hand. “Your father is a master carpenter. You have his hands.”
Vincent stood near the doorway, leaning against the doorframe, watching them.
