Chapter 6 - The Weight of Thirty Years

Arthur looked at Evelyn, who offered him a soft, sympathetic smile, and then at Lily, who was watching him with wide, curious eyes.

Thirty years of wealth, luxury, and success crumbled into dust inside his chest. He had spent his entire life accumulating fortunes to fill a void that he had created himself. He had believed he was a victim of fate, when in reality, he had been a victim of his own fear and stubbornness.

"Why the photograph?" Arthur asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Why put it in the envelope?"

"I didn't put it in," Eleanor said, looking over at Lily.

Lily stepped forward from the couch, her little shoes squeaking on the linoleum floor. She came to the table and looked at Arthur.

"I found the picture in Grandma's old Bible yesterday," Lily explained innocent, earnest voice. "Grandma was crying looking at it. She said the man in the picture was someone special who was lost a long time ago. I thought... if someone is lost, they need hope to find their way back home. So I put the picture in one of my cards."

Arthur looked at the small child. Her pure, innocent kindness had undone thirty years of deception and pride in a single evening.

"You found me," Arthur whispered, tears running freely down his aged cheeks. "You brought me home."

He looked at Eleanor, his first and only true love, now an elderly woman who had endured decades of hardship because of his cowardice. He looked at Evelyn, the daughter he never knew he had, who had grown into a strong, gentle woman without a father's support. And he looked at Lily, his granddaughter, who had handed him a lifeline wrapped in a paper envelope decorated with potato-shaped hearts.

"I am so sorry," Arthur sobbed, bowing his head over the table. "I am so, so sorry. I spent my whole life building an empire of stone, and I left the only things that mattered in the cold."
