Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire

Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire
Before Vance’s mercenaries could even raise their rifle stocks to their shoulders, the high glass skylights along the warehouse roof exploded in a deafening cascade of shattering glass.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Stun grenades rained down from the ceiling, detonating with blinding white flashes and ear-splitting concussive blasts. The tactical mercenaries stumbled backward, clutching their ears and eyes in complete disorientated agony.
Heavy tactical ropes dropped from the steel rafters, and dozens of heavily armed federal agents clad in dark tactical gear descended into the warehouse, their weapon-mounted lasers painting a web of bright red dots across the concrete floor.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Chaos erupted. Gunfire echoed loudly off the metal walls, but Nathan didn't run. He didn't duck behind crates. He walked straight through the smoke and flashing lights, his dark coat billowing behind him, his eyes locked entirely on Victor Vance, who was scrambling frantically toward a rusted side exit door.
From the monitor in the surveillance van, I gasped, gripping Marcus’s arm as I watched Nathan close the distance between himself and Vance with terrifying speed.
Vance reached the metal exit door, kicked it open, and stumbled out into the cold, rain-slicked alleyway outside. But as he turned to run toward the dock edge, Nathan stepped out of the shadows, blocking his path.
Panicking, Vance pulled a small snub-nosed .38 revolver from his coat pocket, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold the grip. "Stay back, Coleman! I swear to God, I'll shoot you! I'll put a bullet right through your heart!"
Nathan didn't slow down. He took three deliberate strides forward, stepped inside the weapon's barrel vector, and grabbed Vance’s wrist with a grip like a steel vise.
With a swift, brutal twist, Nathan broke Vance’s grip, sending the revolver spinning across the wet pavement before falling into the dark ocean below. Before Vance could even scream from the pain in his wrist, Nathan grabbed him by the throat and slammed him violently back against the corrugated steel wall of the warehouse.
The metal groaned under the impact.
Nathan leaned in close, his face inches from Vance’s terrified, rain-soaked eyes.
"You poisoned my wife," Nathan whispered, his voice dripping with an ancient, dark fury that made my skin cold even through the audio feed. "You tried to turn my six-year-old boys into corpses while I watched, helpless. You thought you could break me."
"Nathan... please..." Vance gasped, his legs buckling, his face turning purple as Nathan's grip tightened around his airway. "I'll give you everything... the shipping routes... hundred million cash... just let me leave..."
Nathan’s eyes burned like hot embers in the dark night.
"My sons are alive, Victor," Nathan said softly into Vance's ear. "They are running. They are laughing. They are going to grow up to be strong, good men. And you... you are going to spend every single morning of the rest of your life waking up in a concrete cell, knowing that you lost everything to a father who loved his children."
Heavy footsteps filled the alleyway as a squad of federal tactical officers rounded the corner with rifles raised.
"Hands up! Step away from the suspect!"
Nathan didn't resist. He slowly released his grip on Vance's neck, letting the broken, crying mob boss slump helplessly into the wet gravel. Nathan stepped back, raising his hands with calm, absolute dignity as federal officers pushed Vance down onto his stomach and pulled his arms behind his back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
The lead FBI agent walked up to Nathan, lowering his sidearm and extending a gloved hand. "Mr. Coleman. The perimeter is secure. Vance’s entire secondary network in New York and Boston is being rounded up as we speak."
Nathan shook the agent's hand once, turned around, and walked back through the fog toward our surveillance van.
He reached up to his lapel, tapped his microphone, and spoke softly.
"Emily?"
"I'm here, Nathan," I said, tears overflowing my eyes and spilling down my cheeks as I stared at the camera monitor. "I'm right here."
"Are the boys safe?"
May you like
"They're sound asleep in their beds, Nathan. They're safe."
"I'm coming home," Nathan whispered. "It's finally over."
