Lila walked over, holding a soft cotton blanket, and gently draped it over the children. She sat down on the swing beside Ethan, leaning her head against his chest. Ethan wrapped his arm tightly around her shoulders, pulling her close, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of her heart against his own.
The phone in Ethan’s pocket buzzed once—a routine notification from his office regarding a minor quarterly review. Without looking at it, Ethan reached into his pocket, switched the device to silent, and tossed it onto the wooden table out of arm's reach.
