Chapter 10 - Forever And Always

The winter snow returned the following December, blanketing the city in a thick, pristine layer of white just in time for Christmas Eve.

At the grand mansion—now no longer a silent monument of wealth, but a warm, bustling home filled with laughter, music, and the bright chatter of visiting relatives and friends—the twelve-foot Christmas tree glittered brilliantly in the living room.

Paul Mercier stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a cup of steaming hot chocolate, watching the soft snowflakes dissolve against the glass. Behind him, the fireplace crackled, casting a golden, dancing glow across the Persian rugs and the comfortable velvet armchairs.

The front door opened with a cheerful chime.

“Dad! Marcus! We’re freezing!”

Leia’s voice rang through the foyer, followed by the sound of heavy boots stamping off snow and the warm, deep laughter of Marcus Vance, who walked in carrying an armful of wrapped presents alongside several young volunteers from The North Star Foundation whom they had invited to spend the holidays with them.

Leia hurried into the living room, her steps confident and sure, guided by the familiar layout of the house she had loved and lived in for over a decade. She wore a deep red cashmere sweater that brought out the vibrant warmth in her complexion, her blond hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders.

She walked straight toward the window, her hands reaching out instinctively until they brushed against Paul’s jacket sleeve.

Paul turned immediately, setting his mug down on the side table and wrapping his arms gently around her.

“Merry Christmas, my girl,” Paul whispered, kissing the top of her head.

“Merry Christmas, Dad,” Leia smiled, turning to embrace Marcus as he walked up behind them to join the embrace.

“Dinner is almost ready, everyone!” Marcus announced to the room, drawing cheers from the gathered guests and staff members who had become family over the years.

As the music swelled and the warmth of the home enveloped them all, Paul looked past Leia’s shoulder toward the snow-covered park visible in the distance through the gates. The memory of that frozen bench, the crying child, and the desperate promise he had made on a lonely Christmas Eve flashed through his mind like an old, faded film reel.

He had promised he would never leave her alone again.

And as he looked at Leia—surrounded by love, purpose, family, and light—Paul knew with absolute certainty that some promises were written not just in words, but in the very fabric of eternity.
