Part 2: The Nurse Who Knew Too Much

Dominic watched Sofie carefully as she traced circles on the side of her hot chocolate cup.

"What happened last night?" he asked gently.

Sofie looked down.

"Elena called me before work. She said she'd be home after her night shift. She told me to brush my teeth and leave the porch light on because she likes seeing it when she comes home."

She swallowed.

"But the light stayed on all night."

Dominic's phone vibrated.

Marco.

"I found her," his lieutenant said.

Dominic stood.

"Alive?"

A pause.

"We're not sure. Hospital security footage shows Elena leaving at 10:47 p.m. She never reached the parking garage. But that's not the strange part."

"What is?"

"She was carrying a flash drive. Three men followed her."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

"They belong to Victor Romano."

The café suddenly felt colder.

Victor Romano had once been Dominic's closest ally before greed had turned him into a rival. Romano controlled illegal gambling, extortion, and countless politicians, but lately he had been expanding into something even darker.

Marco continued.

"We also discovered Elena had reported missing patients at Chicago General. Homeless people, immigrants, people with no family. Their files disappeared after surgery."

Dominic slowly looked toward Sofie.

The little girl was humming softly to her teddy bear, completely unaware that her sister had stumbled onto something capable of destroying powerful men.

"I'm coming," Dominic said.

He ended the call.

Sofie looked up.

"Did you find Elena?"

Dominic knelt beside her.

"I'm going to bring her home."

She searched his face.

"You promise?"

He remembered another hospital room years ago.

Another promise he couldn't keep.

This time he answered without hesitation.

"I promise."

Two hours later, black SUVs rolled silently through abandoned warehouses on the South Side.

Marco handed Dominic a tablet.

"A warehouse registered to a fake medical company. Trucks arrive every Friday."

Dominic didn't wait for more.

His men entered like shadows.

Within seconds the building exploded into chaos.

Armed guards rushed forward.

Gunfire echoed through empty corridors.

Dominic moved through the darkness with frightening precision, until he heard a weak voice.

"Help..."

He kicked open a steel door.

Inside were six frightened people locked in cages.

Doctors.

Witnesses.

And sitting against the wall with bruises across her face was a young woman wearing torn blue scrubs.

She looked up.

"I'm Elena Winters."

Dominic immediately noticed the resemblance.

The same blue eyes.

The same stubborn courage.

She was still clutching a small silver flash drive in her hand.

"I wasn't going to let them erase the evidence," she whispered.

Dominic helped her stand.

"Your sister is waiting."

For the first time since her kidnapping, Elena smiled.

"Sofie's safe?"

"She is now."

But as they walked toward the exit, explosions shook the building.

Victor Romano had decided to erase every witness.

And with one desperate order, he accidentally declared war on the most dangerous man in Chicago.
