Chapter 6 - THE TRAP AT THE DOCKS

The air inside Warehouse Sector 4 was freezing. The scent of motor oil and old cardboard hung heavy in the vast, vaulted space.

Victor stood at the server terminal, the progress bar on his tablet slowly crawling toward one hundred percent. He knew he was bait. He knew that the moment he logged into the restricted system using his administrator credentials, Adrian’s security network would alert him.

He heard the heavy steel door at the far end of the warehouse groan open.

The wind howled through the gap, carrying a swirl of snow before the door clicked shut. Footsteps echoed on the concrete floor—deliberate, heavy, and numerous.

Victor didn't run. He didn't even look up from the screen.

"You always were too trusting, Victor," Adrian’s voice echoed through the dark rafters.

Adrian stepped into the pool of light beneath the office window, flanked by three men in heavy winter coats. One of them carried a container of industrial accelerant; another had his hand resting on a silenced pistol.

"I gave you everything, Adrian," Victor said, his voice steady as he watched the progress bar hit ninety percent. "I treated you like a brother. My family treated you like one."

"And you were weak," Adrian sneered, taking a step closer. "You had all this wealth, all this logistics power, and you wanted to use it to feed starving orphans and build clinics. You were wasting the empire your father built. I saw the potential. The port of Bellweather is a goldmine if you know what to move through it. I just... optimized the business."

"By smuggling contraband and poisoning the city?" Victor asked. "By letting a truck with failed brakes run over my wife and child?"

Adrian sighed, a mock gesture of sympathy. "The truck was an unfortunate necessity. Eliza was smart. Too smart. She started looking into the warehouse leases. She was going to tell you, and you would have shut me down. I couldn't let that happen. It was business, Victor. Nothing personal."

"Business," Victor repeated.

"Yes," Adrian said, gesturing to the man with the gun. "And now, business dictates that we close this account. You’ll be found in the ashes of this warehouse. A tragic suicide of a grieving billionaire who couldn't live with his loss any longer."

The gunman raised his weapon, aiming it directly at Victor's chest.

"You should have stayed in your mansion, Victor."

"I agree," Victor said softly. "But I didn't come alone."

Before Adrian could react, the overhead halogen lights of the warehouse surged to life with a blinding flash, illuminating every corner of the massive structure.

From behind the towering crates of shipping containers, a dozen armed federal agents stepped forward, their tactical weapons trained on Adrian and his men.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.

At the same time, Marcus, Victor's head of security, stepped out from the server room behind Victor, his own weapon drawn and aimed at Adrian's head.

Adrian’s eyes widened in sheer panic. He looked around, his face pale, realizing he had walked directly into a trap.

"The server wasn't just downloading files, Adrian," Victor said, unplugging his tablet and showing it to him. "It was broadcasting. This entire conversation was recorded and transmitted directly to the U.S. Attorney’s office. Naomi Wells has been working with the federal task force since six this morning. We didn't need to find your hidden files. You just confessed to conspiracy, smuggling, and double homicide on a live federal wire."

The gunman dropped his weapon to the floor, raising his hands. The other two men quickly followed suit.

Adrian stood frozen, the glass of scotch long gone, his hands trembling as a federal agent slammed him against the concrete wall, pulling his arms behind his back to snap the steel handcuffs into place.

Victor walked down the stairs from the office, stopping just inches from Adrian.

"This is for Eliza," Victor said, his voice low and fierce. "And for Olivia. And for every child you tried to starve to keep your secrets safe."
