PART 2: The Bracelet from the Past

The ambulance lights painted the wet streets of Queens in red and blue as Mateo’s mother was rushed away, barely clinging to life.

Alexander didn’t move. Not even when the crowd dispersed. Not even when the officers began asking questions.

Because he was still staring at the bracelet.

Gold. Diamond-studded. A design he had personally commissioned years ago.

Only one person in the world had ever worn it.

Elena Ruiz.

The woman who disappeared from his life without a trace.

The woman he had once planned to marry.

By the time Alexander arrived at St. Mercy Hospital, Elena was in emergency surgery. Mateo sat in the waiting room wrapped in a thermal blanket, still holding his teddy bear like a shield against the world.

“You… know my mom?” Mateo asked quietly.

Alexander hesitated.

“I knew her,” he said. “A long time ago.”

Mateo studied him carefully, like he was trying to solve a puzzle too big for his age.

“Are you… a good person?”

That question hit harder than any boardroom loss, any lawsuit, any public scandal.

“I don’t know anymore,” Alexander answered honestly.

Hours later, a doctor finally came out.

“She survived,” he said. “Barely. Another few hours and it would’ve been too late.”

Relief should have come.

But instead, Alexander felt dread.

Because Elena woke up screaming his name.

Not in fear.

In warning.

When he entered her hospital room, she turned her head weakly toward him.

“They found us,” she whispered. “I tried to disappear for a reason, Alexander.”

His voice tightened.

“Who found you?”

Her eyes filled with panic.

“The people you work with.”

Silence.

Then everything inside Alexander’s world cracked open.

Because suddenly, pieces began falling into place—missing financial reports, a whistleblower who vanished, a company investigation buried years ago.

And Elena’s next words destroyed whatever remained.

“Mateo… is your son.”
