Chapter 9 - Healing the Fragmented

Three weeks later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured courtyard of Lakewood Memorial Hospital. The air was warm, filled with the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and fresh grass.

In the NICU step-down unit, Mara Carter sat in a comfortable rocking chair near the large glass window. In her arms lay her newborn son, dressed in a soft blue onesie. He weighed five pounds now, his cheeks filling out, his blue eyes bright and alert as he nursed contentedly.

They had named him David Eli Carter—honoring the father who had passed, and the brother who had saved his life.

The door opened, and Dr. Claire Rowan walked in carrying a small gift bag and a stack of discharge papers.

"Look who’s getting ready to go home," Claire smiled, crouching beside the rocking chair.

"Dr. Claire!" Eli called out, running into the room from the adjacent playroom holding a large drawing he had made.

"Let me see that," Claire said, taking the paper.

The drawing showed a large hospital beneath a bright yellow sun. Outside stood a boy carrying a glowing golden bag, surrounded by doctors, police officers, and a tiny baby wrapped in a pink and blue blanket. At the top, in neat block letters, Eli had written: THE HEROES OF LAKEWOOD.

Claire felt her heart swell with emotion. "Eli, this is going straight onto the bulletin board in the emergency department."

Mara looked up at Claire, her eyes filled with deep, unspoken gratitude. She had recovered fully—her blood pressure was stabilized with safe, proper medication, her cardiac functions were completely back to normal, and the trauma of that terrifying rainy night had begun to give way to peace.

"The district attorney called this morning," Mara said softly. "Tessa pleaded guilty to all charges—first-degree murder for David's death, double attempted murder, and financial fraud. She won't ever be getting out of prison."

"Justice has been served," Claire said gently. "And the financial trust?"

"The bank has fully restored the entire estate to Eli and David," Mara smiled, a soft, beautiful expression that lit up her entire face. "We are moving to a new house near the coast next month. Somewhere with a big yard for Eli to run, and a porch where we can watch the ocean."

"That sounds wonderful, Mara," Claire said, signing the final discharge authorization line on the medical charts. "You are all clear to leave."

Eli came over and wrapped his arms around Claire’s waist in a tight, sudden hug.

"Thank you, Dr. Claire," Eli whispered. "Thank you for listening to me when I gave you the medicine bag."

Claire hugged the boy back, holding him tightly for a long moment. "Thank you for being so brave, Eli. The world needs more people like you."
