Chapter 5 - The Penthouse Siege

The helicopter ride from Brooklyn to Manhattan broke every speed and altitude regulation in the FAA rulebook. I didn't care. If Viktor laid a single finger on my son—or on Savannah—I would burn the Moretti family to ash, down to the last cousin.

When the chopper touched down on the private rooftop pad of the Atoria Grand, I vaulted out before the landing gear had even finished settling, my tactical vest securely fastened over my ruined suit.

"All units, breach from the service elevator and the main stairwell," I barked into my comms as I sprinted toward the penthouse access door. "Shoot to kill. No negotiations."

Inside the penthouse, the silence was suffocating.

The double doors leading to the grand foyer were slightly ajar. Glass from a shattered decorative vase glittered on the marble floor.

I raised my pistol, sweeping the corner with practiced, lethal precision.

The living room was empty. But down the hallway, near Leo's nursery, I heard a soft sound—a low, rhythmic murmuring.

I crept forward, my boots making no sound on the plush carpeting.

Inside the nursery, the scene that met my eyes completely defied reality.

Viktor, a cold-blooded professional killer with a dozen notches on his belt, was pinned against the wall. Not by my armed guards. Not by a SWAT team.

He was trapped by a small, trembling housekeeping maid and a six-year-old boy.

Savannah stood directly in front of Leo's crib, holding a heavy crystal decanter in both hands like a club, her knuckles stark white. Her face was bruised from a scuffle, but her eyes blazed with absolute, unyielding fury.

A few feet away, Viktor was groaning on the floor, clutching his right knee where a heavy brass lamp lay shattered in pieces.

"Don't you dare move," Savannah snarled, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "If you take one more step toward that child, I swear I'll cave your skull in."

Viktor winced, his hand reaching instinctively for a suppressed pistol tucked inside his jacket.

I didn't hesitate. I stepped into the doorway, raised my Sig Sauer, and pressed the cold barrel directly against the center of Viktor's forehead.

"Try it," I whispered, my voice colder than liquid nitrogen. "I dare you."

Viktor froze, the color draining entirely from his face as he looked up and recognized me.

"Vance..." he choked out. "I... I was just sent to—"

"You were sent to die," I interrupted, cocking the hammer.

Before I could pull the trigger, a tiny hand gently grazed my wrist.

I looked down.

Leo was standing beside me. His dark eyes weren't locked on the gun, or on the bleeding assassin on the floor. They were locked on Savannah.

"Safe," Leo whispered clearly.

The word echoed in the quiet nursery like a thunderclap.

Savannah dropped the crystal decanter. It hit the carpet with a muffled thud, and she collapsed to her knees, bursting into tears of pure relief.

I lowered my weapon slightly, grabbed Viktor by the collar of his jacket, and dragged him backward out of the nursery, throwing him into the hallway where Frankie and my tactical team were just arriving. Cuff him and throw him in the deepest hole we have," I ordered Frankie without looking back. "And make sure Salvatore knows I'm coming for dinner."

When I walked back into the nursery, Savannah was sitting on the floor, pulling Leo into a gentle, fierce embrace. And for the first time in two years, my son wrapped his arms around another human being and held on for dear life.

I stood in the doorway, watching them, realizing with absolute certainty that my empire, my money, and my power had never truly protected my son.

Love did. And she had brought it right to our door.
