Chapter 6 - Whispers from the Past

Despite the warmth inside the manor, Adrian Varek’s world was never entirely free of danger.
While Adrian had crushed the immediate syndicate responsible for the rain-soaked ambush, the political tremors of his criminal underworld still created ripples. Certain old-guard bosses within the city syndicate grew uneasy seeing their ruthless leader soften. They saw his devotion to his child and the presence of an outsider—a former homeless nurse—as a sign of vulnerability.
One night, while Mara was organizing Clara’s medication log in the east wing, she heard loud, hushed arguing coming from the main courtyard.
Curious, she walked down the stone corridor toward the grand foyer balcony. Looking down, she saw Adrian standing with Viktor and three high-ranking lieutenants of his syndicate. Among them was an older man with silver hair and a bitter face—Dominic Rossi, one of Adrian’s oldest regional captains.
"You're slacking, Adrian!" Rossi’s harsh voice echoed up to the rafters. "You spent two million dollars shipping experimental medical gear from Germany this week! You canceled the dock shipment meeting because your daughter had a fever! The other families are talking! They think the great Varek is turning soft because of a sick brat and a charity case street woman!"
Mara stiffened, her hand tightening on the wooden balcony railing.
Before Rossi could take another breath, Adrian moved so fast he seemed like a blur.
In less than a second, Adrian had crossed the marble floor, grabbed Rossi by the throat, and slammed the older man against a stone pillar. The sound rang through the foyer like a gunshot.
"Speak of my daughter again," Adrian whispered, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register that sent chills down Mara’s spine, "and I will tear your tongue from your mouth and feed it to the dogs."
Rossi choked, his eyes wide with sudden, terrifying realization that the king was far from weak.
"And as for Mara Ellis," Adrian continued, his grip tightening just enough to make Rossi claw at his arm, "she has more courage in her pinky finger than you and your entire crew combined. She took six rounds of high-caliber lead to protect what is mine. If any man in this city disrespects her name, looks at her wrong, or even thinks about bringing danger near her... I will burn his life to ash. Am I clear?"
Rossi nodded desperately, gasping for air.
Adrian released him, tossing him to the floor like a sack of trash. "Get out of my sight. And tell the council that if they want to test my strength, they are welcome to try."
Rossi and his men scrambled out the heavy front doors.
Standing high above on the balcony, Mara stood motionless, her heart pounding in her chest. She had seen the terrifying, lethal side of Adrian Varek—the mafia boss the city feared.
Yet, as Adrian turned back around, adjusted his cuffs, and wiped his brow, he looked up at the balcony and caught her eyes. The cold, murderous fury in his gaze instantly melted away, replaced by an anxious, almost apologetic look.
He walked up the grand staircase toward her, stopping a few feet away.
"I am sorry you had to hear that," Adrian said softly, his voice trembling slightly. "I tried to keep that part of my life away from you."
Mara looked at him. She didn't shrink away. She didn't look at him with fear. She stepped forward, reaching out to gently smooth the lapel of his suit jacket where it had wrinkled.

"I know who you are to the world, Adrian," Mara said quietly, looking up into his storm-gray eyes. "But I also know who you are to Clara. And who you have been to me. You are a protector."
Adrian looked at her, deeply moved by her understanding, and slowly brought his hand up to lightly touch the side of her soft face. "I will protect both of you," he promised softly. "Always."
