Chapter 9 - The Bright Future

Three months later.

The rain was tapping gently against the tall windows of my main dining room, just as it had on the night a five-year-old girl stopped a poisoned pill inches from my mouth.

The chandelier threw a warm, golden light across the white marble table, silver flatware, and a fresh cup of espresso. Beside it sat a brand-new, completely sealed amber prescription bottle, filled with genuine, life-saving medication verified three times over by independent medical specialists.

I sat at the head of the table, cutting into a plate of perfectly prepared roast beef seasoned with rosemary.

The door opened softly.

Sophia walked in, wearing a bright yellow sweater, clutching her stuffed bear under one arm. Behind her walked Elena, carrying a tray of fresh pastries for dessert.

Sophia stopped beside my chair, looking up with bright, intelligent eyes.

I smiled, setting my fork down.

“Good evening, Sophia,” I said.

“Good evening, Mr. Moretti,” she replied cheerfully.

She reached into her pocket, pulled out a fresh piece of paper, and laid it flat on the corner of the table. It wasn't a drawing of medicine bottles or clocks anymore. It was a colorful picture of a smiling family standing beneath a bright sun, with a little girl holding hands with an old man in a sharp suit.

“Is this one correct?” she asked.

I looked down at the drawing, feeling a profound, genuine peace settle deep into my chest.

“It is the most correct thing I have ever seen,” I said softly, picking up the drawing and placing it right beside my coffee cup.

Elena smiled warmly, resting a hand on her daughter’s shoulder. “Go on, sweetheart, wash your hands for dessert.”

Sophia nodded and scampered off toward the kitchen, her laughter echoing lightly down the long, secure hallway of an estate that was finally, truly at peace.
