Chapter 9 - The Summit at the Harbor

The grand ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel glittered under the glow of crystal chandeliers. Representatives from global logistics firms, financial institutions, and city municipal boards had gathered for the annual winter trade summit. For Ethan Cross, it was a mandatory appearance—a public display of dominance and stability to prove that the Cross syndicate had fully transitioned into a legitimate, untouchable corporate superpower.

Dressed in a tailored obsidian tuxedo, Ethan moved through the crowd with effortless grace, accompanied by Elena Vance, whose polished expertise managed the corporate relations side of the empire with surgical precision.

Near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the icy harbor stood a group of foreign investors, speaking in hushed tones. Among them was Lord Julian Vance—no relation to Elena, but a prominent British financier representing Meridian Trust. He swirled a glass of amber scotch, his eyes fixed on Ethan as he approached.

"Mr. Cross," Julian said, offering a tight, polite smile. "Your reputation precedes you. They say Boston’s shipping lanes are safer under your watch than they’ve been in decades."

"Safety isn't a gift, Lord Vance," Ethan replied smoothly, accepting a glass of sparkling water from a passing server. "It’s a deliberate choice. One that usually involves weeding out bad investments and external interference."

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing. "A bold statement. Especially considering your recent customs holds at Terminal Four. Bureaucracy can be terribly exhausting when invisible hands start pulling strings."

"Invisible hands tend to get caught in the machinery," Ethan retorted, his voice remaining dangerously calm. "If Meridian Trust has a proposal for our European routes, they can bring it to the negotiating table during daylight hours. Playing games in customs shadow-boxes will only result in your assets being frozen permanently."

Before Julian could formulate a sharp reply, the grand doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open. Marco entered quietly, flanked by two security personnel, but his eyes locked immediately onto Ethan. He didn't speak, but he gave a subtle, sharp nod—the coded signal that the digital trap set for Meridian Trust had successfully sprung. Their shell accounts had just been exposed and locked by federal regulators.

Julian’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the glowing screen, and watched his carefully constructed corporate front collapse in real time.

"It appears your evening has been interrupted, Lord Vance," Ethan said quietly, setting his glass down on a nearby tray. "Enjoy the rest of the summit. Or what's left of it."

As Julian stormed out of the ballroom in a panic, Elena let out a quiet breath of relief, looking up at Ethan with deep admiration.

"Checkmate," Elena murmured.

"No," Ethan corrected, his gaze softening as he looked out toward the dark, starlit harbor where their ships sailed unhindered. "Just the beginning of a clean board."
