Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Marble

The Vance estate was not a house; it was a fortress built of black granite and reinforced glass, perched high on the ridge overlooking the snow-covered valley. Iron gates snapped shut behind our convoy with the heavy thud of a prison door. Men with automatic weapons patrolled the perimeter in silent, rhythmic patterns.

Inside, the estate was a masterpiece of cold elegance—marbled hallways, soaring ceilings, and expensive art that felt more like a display of wealth than a home. Yet, beneath the grand facade, there was an unmistakable tension. Every guard stood at attention; every servant moved with hushed urgency.

Julian carried Chloe up the grand staircase himself, refusing to let any of his men touch her. I followed closely behind, my cheap sneakers squeaking softly against the polished marble floor, feeling entirely out of place in my faded jeans and work shirt.

The master guest suite had been converted into a private medical room. A sharp-looking woman in a white lab coat—Dr. Aris—immediately set to work examining Chloe. I stayed by the side of the bed, holding Chloe’s hand just as I’d promised.

"Mild hypothermia, some bruising on her wrists from restraint, but physically she will recover," Dr. Aris reported after twenty minutes, stepping back from the bed. "Emotionally... it will take time, Mr. Vance."

Julian stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out into the swirling blizzard. "Find out who leaked her location. Check the security logs for the south gate."

"Already on it, sir," Viktor, his chief of security, murmured from the doorway before slipping out into the hall.

Julian turned toward me. The harsh overhead lights cast deep shadows across his face, highlighting the sharp angle of his jaw and the exhaustion lined around his eyes. "You stayed."

"I said I would," I replied, smoothing a hair away from Chloe’s forehead. She had finally drifted off to sleep, her breathing deep and even, aided by a mild sedative and the warmth of three heated blankets. "She's safe now."

"Safe is a temporary state," Julian said, walking over to the side of the bed. He looked down at his daughter, his expression softening just enough for me to glimpse the father hidden beneath the mafia kingpin. "Her mother died three years ago. Since then, my enemies have viewed her as my only vulnerability."

"Then why keep living like this?" I asked, the question slipping out before I could censor myself. "If you have all this power, all this money, why live in a cage where your own child isn't safe?"

Julian’s eyes snapped up to mine, cold and sharp. "Because if I step down, there are fifty men waiting to take my place, and every single one of them would put a bullet in her head just to ensure I never return. Power isn't a choice for men like me, Lena. It's a survival strategy."

He stepped closer, standing less than an arm's length away. Up close, I could smell cedarwood, expensive rain, and the faint, bitter scent of gunpowder.

"You have courage," he said softly. "Most people tremble when I speak to them. You yelled at me in a public lobby."

"I cared more about the girl than your reputation," I replied, matching his gaze. "And I still do."

Before he could answer, the door burst open. Viktor stood in the frame, his face pale, a smear of fresh blood on his collar.

"Boss," Viktor breathed, his voice tight. "We have a problem. The Moretti family just crossed the river. They know she's here."
