Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Knock

By Friday afternoon, Jack’s life had transformed so drastically that he felt like he was living inside a movie script he hadn't consented to sign.

The $50,000 check had cleared without a hitch at the local bank—the teller had looked at the stamp, checked her computer, and treated Jack with a sudden, respectful deference that felt deeply surreal. In less than twenty-four hours, Jack had paid off the back rent, cleared the electric bill with its ominous red stamp, bought a mountain of groceries that filled their refrigerator to the absolute brim, and even pre-ordered the winter field trip tickets for Owen’s school, complete with extra spending money for hot chocolate.

Yet, a lingering sense of mystery remained. Who was M.?

Was it an eccentric millionaire? A guardian angel? Or simply someone playing a very elaborate, generous prank?

Jack was sitting at the kitchen table, helping Owen build a Lego spaceship, when a sharp, authoritative knock echoed from the front door.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Jack frowned, exchanging a glance with Owen. They didn't expect visitors. Their landlord usually didn't knock—he just slid notices under the door.

"Stay here, buddy," Jack said softly, standing up and wiping his hands on his jeans.

He walked over to the door, peered through the peephole, and gasped. Standing on the landing was not a collection agency or a delivery boy. It was a tall, immaculately dressed man in a charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase, flanked by two other men in dark coats who looked like secret service agents.

Jack slowly turned the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

"Mr. Jack Mercer?" the man asked in a crisp, polished tone.

"Yes?" Jack said, his hand instinctively gripping the edge of the door. "Can I help you?"

"Arthur Vance," the man said, extending a hand. "Chief of Staff to Ms. Margaret Caldwell, CEO and Chairperson of Caldwell Enterprises."

Jack stared at the extended hand for three seconds before shaking it mechanically. "Caldwell... Enterprises? As in Caldwell Tower downtown?"

"The very same," Arthur smiled warmly. "I apologize for dropping by unannounced, Mr. Mercer, but we have a matter of some urgency to discuss with you. May I come in?"

"Uh... sure. Of course," Jack stepped aside, his mind spinning wildly.

Arthur stepped into the cramped apartment, his sharp eyes taking in the clean, modest interior, the paper snowflakes taped to the window, and the half-built Lego spaceship on the floor. He turned back to Jack with an expression of profound respect.

"I won't beat around the bush, Mr. Mercer," Arthur said, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a thick, leather-bound document. "On Tuesday evening, in Grant Park, you shared your dinner and your last four dollars with a woman sitting on a bench."

Jack’s heart skipped a beat. A cold sweat broke out across his neck. "That... that was just a regular person. She was freezing. I didn't think—"

"You didn't think about yourself," Arthur interrupted gently. "You thought about her. What you didn't know, Mr. Mercer, is that the woman on that bench was Margaret Caldwell herself."

The room seemed to tilt sideways. Jack’s jaw dropped. "The... the billionaire? The owner of the skyscraper?"

"The very same," Arthur nodded. "Ms. Caldwell conducts periodic field evaluations to understand the human element of the city her company impacts. Most people walked past her. You didn't. And because of your character, your empathy, and your unyielding integrity, Ms. Caldwell has decided to make a few adjustments to your employment status."

"My employment status?" Jack stammered. "I was laid off from Apex Logistics! I don't even have a job!"

Arthur smiled, sliding a formal employment contract across the laminate table.

"As of this morning, Apex Logistics has undergone a complete administrative restructuring," Arthur said smoothly. "The previous regional director has been relieved of his duties due to severe misconduct and unethical termination practices. Furthermore, Ms. Caldwell has personally created a new corporate office: Vice President of Community Relations and Workforce Welfare for the Midwest division."

Arthur tapped the signature line on the document.

"Base salary: two hundred and fifty thousand dollars per annum, with full medical benefits, educational trusts for your dependents, and an office on the twenty-eighth floor of Caldwell Tower. We’d like you to start Monday morning, Mr. Mercer. Are you ready for your next adventure?"
