PART 1 – The Ring That Should Have Stayed Buried

A barefoot bread girl was walking through the rain with his missing fiancée’s ring on her left hand.
Sixteen years after Letícia vanished pregnant, millionaire Eduardo Albuquerque stepped out of a black SUV and forgot how to breathe.
Paraty was drowning under a hard June storm when he saw her.
Thin shoulders. Wet dress. A basket of bread pressed to her chest like losing it would ruin the only thing she had left.
He only meant to help.
Then she lifted the cloth from the rolls, and lightning hit silver.
A pale blue stone.
A handmade band.
The exact ring Eduardo had commissioned with a hidden engraving no one else on earth should have been wearing.
He had slid it onto Letícia’s finger the week before she disappeared.
She was three months pregnant when she left him with one letter and a wound money never closed.
‘What’s your name?’ he asked.
The girl swallowed. ‘Isabela, sir.’
His pulse turned violent.
Isabela.
The name Letícia once whispered into his neck at night.
The name she said she would save for a daughter.
Eduardo bought every loaf in the basket.
Paid triple.
Then handed the girl his personal number.

‘Keep this,’ he said. ‘If your mother ever needs anything, call me.’
She stared at the card like it might burn her.
Eduardo let her walk away.
He didn’t chase her.
Didn’t ask to see the inside of the ring.
Didn’t say the words tearing up his throat.
At 11:17 that night, his phone lit up with an unknown number.
A girl’s frightened voice whispered, ‘Sir… my mother saw your card. She said you were never supposed to find that ring.’
Then a woman took the phone.
‘Eduardo…’
He knew that voice before she said another word
