Part 2: The Monster Behind the Signature

Part 2: The Monster Behind the Signature
Nathan barely realized he was still breathing.
His eyes remained fixed on the final page of the documents Sarah had hidden inside Lily's coat.
It was not a confession.
It was far worse.
The papers revealed that Marcus Kane had secretly transferred every family asset—including the children's inheritance and Sarah's life insurance—into a network of shell companies. Attached was a notarized guardianship agreement naming Marcus as the sole legal guardian should Sarah "become medically incapacitated."
The date on the document chilled Nathan even more.
It had been signed three weeks before Sarah was ever admitted to a hospital.
Someone had planned everything.
There were medical reports with forged signatures claiming Sarah suffered from severe depression and paranoid delusions.
Nathan immediately recognized the forged physician's name.
"I trained with him," he whispered.
His stomach turned.
Marcus hadn't simply abused Sarah.
He had built a legal machine designed to erase her.
The final page was a handwritten note.
Nathan,
If you're reading this, I was right to trust you.
Marcus found out that our twins inherited Grandpa's trust fund on their seventh birthday. He doesn't want children.
He wants money.
He tried to make me sign everything away. When I refused, he said accidents happen every winter.
If I disappear...
Protect Lily.
Protect the boys.
Please forgive me.
Love,
Sarah
Nathan closed his eyes.
Seven years ago he had slammed this very door in Sarah's face.
He remembered every cruel word.
"You'll come back when he destroys your life."
Instead...
She had never come back.
Until tonight.
A police siren echoed through the snow.
Paramedics rushed inside as Rosa pointed toward the living room.
"The babies are warming up," one medic reported.
"Lily?"
"Hypothermia, but she's fighting."
Nathan refused to leave her side.
Hours later, Lily finally opened her eyes.
She looked around the unfamiliar room before spotting him.
"You really came."
Nathan swallowed hard.
"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner."
She smiled weakly.
"Mom said you'd say that."
Before Nathan could answer, every security monitor in the house flashed red.
INTRUDER DETECTED.
Three black SUVs had stopped outside the iron gates.
Marcus Kane stepped out wearing an expensive wool coat, carrying himself with the confidence of a man who believed money could buy anything.
He pressed the intercom.
"My children are inside."
Nathan answered without opening the gate.
"No."
Marcus smiled.
"My lawyer already contacted the police. You're harboring my family."
Nathan held up the plastic envelope in front of the camera.
"I've read everything."
For the first time, Marcus's smile disappeared.
"You have no idea what you're holding."
"I know exactly what I'm holding."
Marcus leaned toward the camera.
"You think paper can stop me?"
Nathan's voice became frighteningly calm.
"No."
He pressed another button.
The steel shutters dropped over every window.
The security lights flooded the property.
"The police aren't coming because you called them."
Marcus frowned.
"They're coming because I did."
Within minutes, flashing blue lights filled the mountain road.
Detectives surrounded Marcus before he could return to his SUV.
One officer stepped forward.
"Marcus Kane, we have a warrant to search your property."
Marcus laughed.
"You have nothing."
Nathan quietly handed the detective Sarah's envelope.
"You might want to start with this."
The detective's expression changed after reading only the first page.
Marcus suddenly stopped laughing.
